Job Summary
The Capon lab investigates the immune and genetic determinants of skin inflammation, with a view to identifying new disease drivers and therapeutic targets. The successful candidate will provide technical support to the group activities, by undertaking complex experiments (e.g. gene cloning, cell culture) and facilitating the smooth running of the lab. Some weekend work may occasionally be required.
Organizational Status
The Research Technician 3 will work with other laboratory members and report directly to Dr. Francesca Capon (Senior Scientist at the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, and Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics). The incumbent will also support students and volunteers and will work in a laboratory affiliated with the University of British Columbia, subject to the University's workplace safety rules.
Work Performed
The Technician will be responsible for day-to-day operations in the Capon lab. Duties will involve:
Planning, performing and troubleshooting experiments, utilizing complex laboratory procedures (gene cloning, cell culture and transfection, western blotting)
Processing samples for genetic analyses, by carrying out DNA isolation, PCR and Sanger sequencing
Keeping accurate records of experiments and results
Presenting results and participating in weekly lab meetings
Coordinating the implementation and ensuring compliance of lab safety rules
Contribute to lab chores and ordering
Perform other related duties as needed or requested.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors may result in data loss, inefficient workflows, delays in achieving project goals, and potential negative impacts on funding.
Supervision Received
The research technician will be supervised by Dr. Francesca Capon.
Supervision Given
None but may train others in the use of lab procedures or equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Background and experience in genetics, immunology, biochemistry
Experience with at least one of the following: western blotting, real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing
Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Ability to write and communicate clearly
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols
