Job Summary

This Research Assistant/Technician position in the Kizhakkadathu lab will work on blood/organ cell surface research and also, contribute to the daily operations and maintenance of a research laboratory. Duties will include equipment maintenance, inventory management, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Organizational Status:

Works under supervision of the Principal Investigator and/or of senior researchers in the lab.

Work Performed

Performs experiments, collects, records, analyses and interprets experiment results under the supervision of a senior researcher

Assists senior level staff and senior PhD students with the design of experiments and/or development of new techniques for laboratories or facilities.

Use Microsoft Office for data collection and analysis

Assists with the writing of scientific publications, presents data results at the laboratory meetings

Recruits new blood donors for research purposes.

Performs technical tasks, such as:

  • Prepare reagent and solutions
  • Work in sterile condition with biohazard material;
  • Clean, disinfect laboratory equipment; autoclave and dispose biohazard waste
  • Help with the collection and the characterization of mammalian cells (flow cytometry, microscopy).
  • Separate the blood products and modify the cell surface using different chemicals including enzymes, polymers or fluorescent markers
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Attention to detail and exercising judgement are essential. The Research Assistant/Technician will be responsible for reporting errors or problems in their work in a timely manner, and will participate in a resolution to correct those errors. Incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel. Poor judgment would result in loss of experimental data and delay in conducting research.

Supervision Received

The research assistant/technician will report directly to the Supervisor; however, the position requires independent work as well as joint work with other lab members

Supervision Given

The Research Technician will work as part of a team and may train and advise students on various techniques.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates holding a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s or Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in general science, biochemistry or related area of study. Previous research experience, especially in cell surface modification, blood analysis, cell culture, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and analytical instrumentation.
