His work focuses on applying systems biology and advanced data science approaches to uncover the underlying causes of chronic lung diseases and identify new preventative and therapeutic strategies. The Ryu Lab aims to integrate population omics research with translational studies to improve patient outcomes and advance precision medicine in respiratory health.The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Ryu and collaborating groups to conduct in vitro cell culture exposure experiments and genomic analyses, such as PCR and real-time, long-read sequencing. In addition to assisting with experimental execution, responsibilities will include maintaining laboratory equipment, managing supply inventories, and overseeing human bronchial epithelial cell cultures. The incumbent is expected to conduct research ethically and in full compliance with the policies and regulations set by the University of British Columbia.Organizational Status:The successful candidate will report directly to Dr. Min Hyung Ryu, the principal investigator, and will work in a strong collaborative and collegial manner with all project team members and/or collaborators to meet research goals and objectives.Work Performed:Perform molecular biology techniques including (but not limited to) DNA/RNA/protein isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, human clinical sample preparation, and ELISAs.Manage cell culture stocks through aseptic techniques on a regular basisTroubleshoot experiments with the principal investigator or delegate; repeating experiments as needed.General lab housekeeping and maintenance which may include maintaining common buffer stocks, waste management, inventory maintenance, and organization.Participate in meetings related to technical, scientific, and organizational aspects of projects.Other related tasks and duties as required.Consequences of Error/Judgement:The technician is expected to work independently and exercise sound judgment in prioritizing tasks. They are responsible for making professional decisions and recommendations in all aspects of their work and ensuring the quality of research activities. Inadequate performance may result in failure to achieve project objectives, impact the potential for publication, and jeopardize future funding opportunities. For instance, errors such as the loss of a critical lab culture or an experiment failure could delay research progress and project timelines. Comprehensive training will be provided, and ongoing support for learning and professional development will be encouraged.Supervision Received:The applicant will be trained on relevant research techniques and expected to perform the tasks independently. The principal investigators will assist in troubleshooting as necessary.
