New fixed-term position (28 hours/week - 4 days a week) to support a research initiative under NSERC CREATE program. Located in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. This program will be ongoing for a few years, thus offering possibility of contract renewal.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Program Director for the CREATE program for training on complex MIXtures of CHEMical contaminants - MIXCHEM, the Research Assistant 2 oversees the coordination of a network encompassing research academics in several Canadian institutions, graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and partners from academia, industry, government, non-profits and local communities. The Research Assistant 2 brings their experience on environmental contaminants and ecotoxicology to support research and training activities related to NSERC CREATE MIXCHEM, EcotoQ, and the Canada Research Chair in Biocolloids and Surfaces. They will be responsible for day-to-day support in coordination and execution of CREATE MIXCHEM research and professional training activities as well as the budget.
Primary Duties:Provides research support to a network encompassing research academics in several Canadian institutions, graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and partners from academia, industry, government, non-profits and local communities.
Assists the Principal Investigator in all operations related to the running of the research network.
Acts as primary resource person for all aspects of the program including organization of research training workshops/seminars/mobility experiences for research trainees, organization of annual research symposium and retreat.
Ensures compliance with NSERC CREATE reporting requirements and regulations. Ensures ongoing communication between the network offices, the Finance office at McGill, and researchers at other universities. Keeps abreast of NSERC rules and requirements. Produces progress reports (including detailed data and financial reporting) for NSERC.
Assists with the recruitment of research trainees, and the establishment of internship/mobility experience agreements with new companies/government agencies/academic partners. Receives, organizes, and does preliminary analysis of applications from potential CREATE trainees.
Responsible for communicating with all network participants, including students and postdoctoral fellows, and tracking their participation in training activities, mobility experiences, etc. Solicits and advises on periodic progress reports from research trainees and their research supervisors.
Supports PI in overseeing research activities in their laboratories, preparation and review of research documentation, functional supervision of research trainees, providing technical guidance and training to graduate and undergraduate students, purchasing of laboratory supplies, compilation, review and analysis of data. Contributes to maintenance and operation of selected laboratory instrumentation.
Assists in preparation of grant applications.
Supports EcotoQ in their activities (maintains relationships with EcotoQ regular members, collaborators, and students; stays up to date on various events and news related to ecotoxicology and participates in conferences and networking events to raise the profile of the research cluster; contributes to budget management, the production of progress reports for the FRQNT, and the preparation of requests for grants; collects data and updates a database to track EcotoQ members' resumes, grants, collaborations, and publications, etc.)
Designs environmental studies with an emphasis on environmental contaminants (e.g., microplastics, metals) and ecotoxicology, analysis of research data, interpretation and written/oral communication of research results
Other duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications:M.Sc. degree in the environmental sciences (e.g., environmental chemistry, environmental engineering). Demonstrated experience in research and program support, including an NSERC CREATE program. Proven expertise in design of environmental studies with an emphasis on environmental contaminants (e.g., microplastics, metals) and ecotoxicology, analysis of research data, interpretation and written/oral communication of research results. Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills Ability to set priorities, handle several activities concurrently, meet deadlines. Experience with MS office applications and creating/editing websites. Proficiency with social media and the use of online meeting software applications. Self-motivated, capable of working independently as well as within a team setting. Must be bilingual (English and French, oral and written).
