Job Description

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.


Position Overview:





This position is for a Research Assistant to develop and deploy a real-time health data collection system for pregnant women struggling with addiction. The candidate will work with wearables devices, Raspberry?Pi sensors, and prototype novel monitoring approaches to support maternal well-being.


Duties:




Configure Wear?OS or other smartwatches for continuous vital-sign monitoring. Manage Raspberry?Pi networks to capture environmental and physiological data. Architect real-time data ingestion, storage, and preprocessing pipelines. Research and evaluate novel sensors (e.g., flexible biosensors, BLE devices). Design and conduct tests to validate sensor accuracy and reliability. Maintain technical documentation (hardware guides, code repos, SOPs).

Qualifications:





Bachelor's in computer science, Engineering, or related field. Hands-on experience with Wear?OS, Raspberry?Pi, Arduino or similar platforms. Proficiency in Python, Java/Kotlin (Wear?OS), or C/C++. Familiarity with Bluetooth, BLE, and Wi-Fi communications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Prior experience as a research assistant (an asset).

The period of work will be from

September 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025

and the estimated total hours of work will be

100-200 hours
