Job Description


Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.Position Overview:This research project focuses on the implementation of responsible theatre practices, specifically integrating both sustainability and accessibility tools in a live stage performance. The research assistant will assist in finding resources, compiling material, reaching out to consultants and partner organizations, coordinating accessible elements for performance, tracking of data, and compiling results of the project.Duties:

  • Gather materials, data, and resources on current responsible theatre practices, specifically in regards to environmental sustainability and accessibility for persons with disabilities.
  • Collect data in regards to cost, carbon footprint, waste management, and other quantifiable information on the environmental impact of current production and performance practices as well as tracking any changes implemented.
  • Track attendance and utilization of accessibility tools for persons with disabilities.
  • Work with supervisor and consultants to present information to students, artists and production team members.
  • Work with supervisor and consultants to prepare a final report on the project and a presentation as part of the Experiential Learning Fund annual gathering.
  • Consult with national experts to provide a list of tools, options, and resources.
  • Assist in developing a list of potential vendors, suppliers, and sources for sustainable products.
  • Assemble notes and maintain an index of information in an ongoing fashion during the project.
  • Update documents tracking carbon footprint and environmental cost throughout the process.
  • Create databases, update status and progress, maintain regular contact with consultants, and follow-up with partner organizations as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating accessibility-focused initiatives for a live performance, including audio description, ASL interpretation, and a relaxed performance.
Qualifications:
  • Area of Study: Theatre.
  • Completion of an Introduction to Theatre course (THFM 1001, 1002 or 1003) is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Excel
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
