The Black Community Resource Centre (BCRC) is seeking a dynamic and passionate Research Assistant to support our diverse range of projects aimed at empowering and engaging Black community in Quebec. As a Research and Community Engagement Assistant, you will assist with research projects, workshop facilitation, content creation and outreach to engage community members in meaningful and transformative learning experiences.
Additionally, the BCRC and McGill University is conducting a multi-year research study EnGen: Enabling InterGenerational connections to promote mental health and well-being, and co-develop climate change solutions. This internship will provide you with the opportunity to support in the implementation of Phase (2) of the study that includes co-designing intervention and piloting intervention. This is a great opportunity to gain professional experience in community work, education, and applied social research while contributing to youth empowerment in the Black community.
Reporting to the Managing Director
, the Research Assistant will support both academic and community-based research projects, helping to coordinate and carry out research and outreach activities. This role involves day-to-day project coordination, clear communication with team members and community partners, maintaining accurate records and community engagement. The Research Assistant will also help plan and facilitate outreach efforts and support archiving work that ensures community voices and histories are respected and preserved.
Duties and Responsibilities
Youth Engagement & Mentorship
Facilitate youth participation in a range of BCRC initiatives, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
Research Support
Assist youth in conducting research related to BCRC projects, offering guidance on research methods, credible sources, and ethics.
Help youth interpret and present their findings clearly and accurately.
Collaborate with project teams to integrate research into broader initiatives such as podcasts, documentaries, and community events.
Workshop Facilitation
Support the planning and facilitation of workshops on topics including history, culture, civic engagement, and digital storytelling.
Provide in-person and remote assistance during sessions to ensure active participation and a positive learning experience for all.
Actively engage with youth during workshops, discussions, and creative activities, helping them develop their ideas and skills.
Provide mentorship and guidance to encourage youth involvement, learning, and personal growth.
Qualifications
Degree in a related discipline (Social Science, Environmental Studies, Psychology, Education, Humanities, Public Health, or a related fields).
Interest in or experience with climate change, mental health, intergenerational connections, or community-based research.
Experience in an applied social research environment
Research skills including: document and literature reviews; supporting quantitative and qualitative data collection; data entry, coding and analysis; table/graphics; proofreading; technical report writing
Familiarity with basic computer programming and statistical software packages.
Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and age
Knowledge and experience in community development and intercultural engagement
Experience with designing, facilitating, recording and analyzing focus groups, surveys, interviews, secondary research and desk reviews
Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
French language skills would be considered asset
Familiarity with Human-Centered Design (HCD) techniques or design thinking is an asset
Strong writing and organizational skills
Can work with a team and support project activities as needed
Experience with social media & web content or blogging
