Research Assistant, Build Up Saskatoon

The Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives invites applications for a Research Assistant for the project, Determining the Economic and Social Value of Social Enterprises in Saskatoon: the Case of Build Up Saskatoon.

This research project assesses the social outcomes generated by non-profit organizations engaged in employment creation for individuals with prior involvement in criminal activities and/or experience multiple barriers to employment, using Build Up Saskatoon as a case study. The project has developed a framework and dataset to assess the financial and social benefits that flow from Build Up Saskatoon\'s programming, including potential cost reductions to municipal and provincial government agencies. The Research Assistant will contribute to the pilot project by: 1) working with CCSC to conduct qualitative interviews with BUILD UP Saskatoon participants to gauge their perspectives on social outcomes of BUILD UP Saskatoon programming; and 2) conducting an analysis of social procurement policies across Canada to examine the role(s) that government can play to scale up organizations such as BUILD UP Saskatoon.

The Research Assistant will report to Dr. Marc-Andre Pigeon, Director, Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives (CCSC). The general location of work will be in the Diefenbaker Building, where the CCSC is located.

The typical duties for the Research Assistant include:

  • Conducting a review of municipal social procurement policies
  • Conducting interviews with study participants
  • Analyzing qualitative data
  • Analyzing policy documents
  • Drafting a report on the analyses and findings
  • Participating in regular meetings with the research team, including research partners
Required Number of Hours: Up to 20 hours per week

Duration of Employment: Immediately to September 30, 2023

Qualifications
Education: Completion of a bachelor\'s degree in a social sciences or related discipline or a more advanced designation. Preference will be given to applicants currently registered in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.

Experience: Experience compiling and analyzing qualitative data and writing up results is required. Experience conducting interviews is an asset. Experience engaging with public servants and not-for-profit employees is an asset. Experience working with Indigenous communities and marginalized people-particularly who are un/under-housed people, use substances, have been criminalized and/or incarcerated, and mental health consumer/survivors-preferred.
