Research Assistant, Blackleg Biocontrol

Job Description

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.


Position Overview:





Assist in a project to find a biocontrol agent for blackleg in canola. Isolate biocontrol bacteria and test against lab strains of blackleg for inhibition. Identify biocontrol bacteria isolated in this project.


Duties:




Prepare sterile media, inoculate, grow and safely dispose of bacteria and fungi. Gram staining and microscopy. Challenge assays between blackleg fungi and bacteria. DNA isolation and PCR. DNA sequencing. Laboratory maintenance.

Qualifications:




3 year degree in Biology or third year in a 4 year Biology degree. Must have completed Biology of the Bacteria and Archaea and Microorganisms and Disease, Genetics and/or Molecular Genetics. 3rd year biochemistry. Aseptic technique and biosafety training. Light microscopy and general staining procedures. Ability to use an autoclave. Able to prepare media and reagents. Ability to isolate genomic DNA from bacteria using commercial kits. Ability to set up and perform PCR. Use of MinKnow and EPI2ME software.

The period of work will be from

October 22, 2025 - April 30, 2026

and the estimated total hours of work will be

10-120 hours
