Your role

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a Reporter / Editor that is primarily assigned to digital platforms (cbc.ca & social). This position is based in Corner Brook, N.L.

As a Reporter / Editor focusing on digital content you will write news and feature articles on a wide range of topics. You know how to write, edit and package digital news and current affairs content. You have better than average knowledge of social media and desire to deliver excellent journalism.

You are excited by new story treatments and will inspire others to do that same. And you have an understanding of the geography and culture of western Newfoundland.

You will uphold and demonstrate the highest of CBC\xe2\x80\x99s journalistic standards and practices in your work. You also live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Key Tasks:

Pitch, source, research, fact-check and write short and long-form enterprise articles with an understanding of alternative digital storytelling formats that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.

Respond quickly to report on breaking news events as they unfold on all platforms. (digital, social, radio & video).

Repurpose content from other CBC platforms, including writing, packaging stories with strong headlines, photos, video, audio and graphics using the latest information and audience metrics.

Use your experience and interest in data journalism to dig into open source data and other sources to write interesting and unique stories based on data and help build interactive charts. Experience in collecting, interpreting and cleaning data is essential.

Copy edit and publish digital content from other writers.

Schedule and write copy for social media platforms as well as running and moderating livestreams and engaging with social media audiences.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.

Strong understanding of online news, including social media and methods of online content distribution.

Knowledge of standard design software including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Excel, Datawrapper, Mapbox, QGIS and ArcGIS is preferred. Front-end web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a bonus.

Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas.

A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.

A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Attention to detail and strong time management skills.

Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Have a passion for learning new tools and journalism forms -- and an interest in shaping them for the future.

Possession of a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada\'s insurance company.

A degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of two years of recent, related experience.

Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.
