Job Description

This casual position requires the ability to work as both a Wellness Worker and Child Support Worker.

Formerly known as Awo Taan Healing Lodge Society, the shelter Wellness Workers & Child Support staff work within a team of committed members who provide supportive counseling, referrals & advocacy, information, safety planning, and education on family violence while families stay in our 32 bed emergency women's shelter. All programs are offered within a wholistic approach which includes traditional Indigenous Spiritual concepts and ceremonies; blended with contemporary methods.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:



Responsible for intake & discharge of residents; Provide immediate response to crisis calls & provide appropriate crisis intervention; Provide supportive counselling services, advocacy & referrals to residents of the shelter; Assist other Wellness Workers, Child Support Workers, volunteers & practicum students, when necessary; Plan & implement age and skill level appropriate programming which promotes healthy development in children; Provide brief child care while parent/guardian attend essential appointments; Maintain accurate documentation in each resident file, including all relevant forms, referrals, phone assessments & advocacy; Liaise with service providers to refer residents to appropriate resources and services. Compile daily stats; Maintain awareness and current knowledge of trends in services and best practices in family violence shelters in Alberta, and across the country; Knowledge of Danger Assessments; Ensure residents' safety; including developing safety plans with clients and with those that call the crisis line; Facilitate house meetings & Healing Circles; Ability to communicate & model healthy language and behaviours; Must be able to work on-call shifts (days, evenings, overnights, & Child Support) Maintain confidentiality of client information in accordance with Niitoiyis Family Support Society policies; Light cleaning duties; Other duties, as required by the Program Managers and/or Chief Executive Officer.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:



Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, and Sociology preferred or Diploma in Human Services (Social Work) with relevant experience may be considered. A minimum of 1 year previous experience in any of the following areas is required: domestic violence, Children's Services, homelessness, or addictions/mental health; Registered Social Worker or similar accreditation; Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous Culture and traditions, the ability to speak an Indigenous language would be an asset; Knowledge of family violence and its effects; Knowledge of community resources and programs available to support families; Strong interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills; Strong organizational skills and initiative; Ability to work independently & as part of a team; Competent computer skills & accurate program record maintenance; Current Suicide Intervention/Prevention & CPR/First Aid training would be an asset; Knowledge of Trauma Sensitive and Trauma Informed Practice Must provide proof of a current Police Check & Child Welfare Intervention Services Check; Must be willing to work day shift, evening shift, night shift and Child Support shifts.
