JOB TYPE:

Casual, Permanent (most shifts are 8am-12pm; some 8am-3pm shifts, including weekends)

POSITION SUMMARY:



The Shelter Worker is responsible, under the direction of the Shelter Manager and the Medical Manager to take care of the animals, to ensure the cleanliness of the shelter at all times, to welcome the public, and assist the public in responsibly adopting an animal for the duration of its life.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



Shelter Operation



Works on the general cleaning and maintenance of the shelter building and site, ensuring sanitary conditions are met and maintained while closely following shelter procedures; Works directly with animals; Works with the public and volunteers.

Animal Cleaning, Care & Management



Attends morning rounds for updates on specific medical cases and administrates medication to animals in accordance to the Medical Manager; Keeps up to date on protocols affecting the care, treatment and health of shelter animals and attends training sessions as approved by the Shelter Manager; Cleans the shelter in accordance with the most updated Cleaning Procedures and follows the daily checklists designated for each room, including but not limited to cleaning each kennel in use, cleaning all working surfaces, washing dishes and laundry, restocking food and supplies, sweeping, mopping, and restocking food/supplies in their designated area (determined daily) While cleaning each resident at SHAID, the Shelter Worker is responsible for monitoring basic appearance and function of the animals. This includes but is not limited to: monitoring food intake, excrement (fecal, urine, vomit) and overall disposition; Ensures all medical concerns are promptly reported to the Medical Manager.

Administration



Shelter workers are responsible for greeting all visitors that arrive at SHAID in a friendly, professional manner; Collects monetary donations at the shelter. Issues donation receipts, ensures appropriate paperwork is completed and monies are secured until forwarded to the Office Assistant for deposit; Ensures prompt handling of telephone calls in a friendly and helpful manner; Brings complaints from the public to the Shelter Manager as soon as possible; Demonstrates a commitment to safety in the performance of all duties and tasks; Completes additional tasks as assigned by the Medical Manager and Shelter Manager; Maintains the utmost level of confidentiality and discretion in all files.

Animal Adoption



Answers questions pertaining to specific pets for adoption and SHAID's adoption process with the most up-to-date information; Conducts a verbal interview with all potential adopters to ensure the animal of interest will fit into the adopters current household and lifestyle. If approved, Shelter Workers are responsible for reviewing medical records, determine if they need vaccinations or treatments and updating the medical records prior to adoption; Prepares appropriate adoption paperwork with correct information pertaining to the individual animal and reviews the paperwork with the potential adopter before they fill it out; Ensures the adopter is in full agreement of the adoption contract and what this particular animal needs for a successful and responsible pet ownership before finalizing the adoption; Shelter Workers are responsible for disclosing ALL accurate information on this pet including but not limited to: medical procedures and medications the pet received while at SHAID, microchip information and spay/neuter certificates;

Outreach



Maintains cooperative relationships with local groups or individuals also concerned with the care and well-being of animals eg. SPCA, Dog Control, etc; Works professionally with our volunteers and assists them in providing additional information on the shelter procedures, provide support, and breaks.

Working Conditions:



This position works at the shelter. The regular work schedule for this permanent casual position is 1-4 days per week, including weekends, storm days, and holidays.
