The Primary Worker supervises and counsels women in the Correctional Residential Facility (Ellen Osler Home).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial intake package with new residents upon arrival during shift; advise residents regarding the House Rules and Guidelines.
  • Assist residents with achieving goals, monitor progress, and prepare for discharge as directed.
  • Complete voluntary or involuntary discharge procedures for residents as assigned.
  • May assist with the delivery of in-house programs.
  • Perform urinalysis testing as assigned; perform random breathalyzer tests.
  • Ensure that household chores are completed as per the chore sheets and are signed off by resident to verify completion.
  • Conduct research regarding other community programs or services for the benefit of clients as directed.
  • Supervise and assist residents when attending appointments or outings as necessary.
  • Complete case file reporting for all residents in an organized and timely manner.
  • Maintain Residential Duty Log per Ministry Unit and contractual standards.
  • Document and fax medication requests, passes and other requests as necessary.
  • Uphold standards of information security according to policy and contractual obligations and follow access to information procedures.
  • Maintain and update all appropriate documentation related to residents and potential residents.
  • Initiate any new documentation; complete all internal reports and external reports for CSC as assigned.
  • Participate in shift change procedures at the beginning, end of each shift, and document accordingly.
  • Complete monthly Salvation Army according to Ministry Unit protocol.
  • Liaise with Client Care Supervisor, Caseworker, Parole Officers/Duty Officers, and community services to discuss the client\'s progress as required.
  • Model and supervise appropriate behavior; intervene in crises and provide supportive counseling and advocacy as required.
  • Engage in the development of interpersonal relationships that promote dignity and respect.
  • Model and supervise daily life skills of residents, i.e., supervise chores and conduct room inspections.
  • Perform regular collateral checks of residents.
  • Provide guidance and support to volunteers and students to ensure completion of shift duties.
  • May perform \'in charge\' duties as directed.
  • Monitor the environment and residents to ensure safety and security of clients, staff, students, volunteers and visitors, completes regular resident status checks as required.
  • Conduct routine house and grounds checks prior to completing the shift change.
  • Oversee and/or conduct or participate in monthly fire, safety, and security drills when necessary and complete require documentation.

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and how it informs and impacts on all aspects of work.
  • Comply with all Salvation Army operating guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Comply with all Corrections Service of Canada standards and contractual obligations.
  • Maintain information in strict confidence and according to Protected B standards.
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member.
  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Acts and Regulations, use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards and dangers; work in a manner as required by the employer.
  • Maintain and encourage positive interactions with residents.
  • Participate in supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Act in the best interest of the employer at all times.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training as required.
Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a casual relief position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a \xc2\xbd hour paid meal break.
  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of a Community College Diploma in Social Services, Human Services, or equivalent education.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training, or willingness to obtain.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid.
  • Suicide Prevention Training.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Valid Ontario \xe2\x80\x9cG\xe2\x80\x9d class driver\'s license and a current copy of driver\'s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Minimum of two (2) year of prior related experience including experience in a social service setting, counseling, working with marginalized clientele and a social services background.
  • Knowledge of outside community agencies, services, professionals, and other resources related to the Ellen Osler Home activities.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, Office 360 etc.) as well as desktop publishing software; Operations Management Suite (OMS).
  • An understanding of addictions, Mental Health and women\'s issues related to Corrections/Justice.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directives, be self- directed and to direct others.
  • Proven ability to set priorities and manage time.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to complex situations.
  • Be able to lift/move more than 20 pounds.
  • Enhanced Reliability Clearance through the department of Public Works Canada is required as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
