Job Description


The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Department Chair of Animal Science & Aquaculture (ASA), the Registered Veterinary Technicians will provide technical and administrative support to the Veterinary Technology program and its instructors.
Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain clinical teaching space as well as complete routine maintenance and upkeep of clinical and safety equipment used in the veterinary technology program. Collect and supervise student dosimeters.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of supplies and course materials. Order non-pharmaceutical supplies for clinics and surgeries. Assist with maintaining all program records according to university policy, and policies of the labor board, OH&S, EH&S and items needed for accreditation purposes.
  • Provide technical support for labs and classes. Ensure all necessary equipment is in place, cleaned and put away properly at the end of labs, and all instructor-developed course materials and handouts are printed and distributed. Assist students with technical questions and equipment.
  • Provide assistance to students and research staff with animal husbandry and handling within the animal holding room.
  • Help instructors to coordinate field trips, including driving, and organization and distribution of required supplies.
  • Communicate with attending veterinarian on patient care and status as appropriate, and with animal providers to arrange drop-off and discharge of patients. Be present for animal discharge.
NoteTwo positions are available, one regular ongoing position and one one-year term position. Candidates are asked to identify in their cover letters if they wish to be considered for one or both positions.The incumbents will work M-F, and be part of a rotating on-call schedule for evenings, week-ends and holidays. Periodically the incumbents may be required to work irregular hours based on operational needs of the academic term. Scheduling and compensation will be in accordance with the collective agreement.The incumbents will be regularly exposed to animal disease and pathogens, and will be required to handle and restrain animals and work with a variety of cleaning products.Due to operational requirements, the successful applicants are required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Veterinary or Animal Health Technology diploma from a CVMA accredited program plus approximately three to five years\' experience working in a veterinary setting as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
  • Current Registered Veterinary Technician status with the ability to maintain RVT registration in Nova Scotia.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Competent in use of MS Office suite, internet search engines.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver\'s license.
  • Ability to bend, crouch and lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
