Position Summary:
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) plays a critical role in delivering compassionate, professional, and high-quality nursing care to residents in a long-term care setting. Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the RPN is responsible for assessing residents' health needs, administering medications and treatments, and ensuring the overall well-being, safety, and dignity of residents.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver direct nursing care to residents in accordance with individual care plans and physician orders.
Administer medications and treatments accurately and document according to standards and policies.
Monitor and assess residents' health status on an ongoing basis and respond to changes appropriately.
Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including RNs, PSWs, physicians, and allied health staff, to ensure a holistic approach to resident care.
Provide direction and supervision to Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and other unregulated care providers.
Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in residents' records using electronic charting systems.
Participate in care conferences, family meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
Respond to medical emergencies and follow appropriate protocols.
Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and other safety procedures.
Promote and support a culture of respect, dignity, and inclusion for all residents and team members.
Qualifications:
Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Practical Nurse.
Completion of a recognized Practical Nursing program.
Experience in geriatric, long-term care, or community nursing preferred.
CPR and First Aid Certification.
Knowledge of applicable legislation such as the Long-Term Care Homes Act, Regulated Health Professions Act, and Resident's Bill of Rights.
Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Proficiency in electronic health records (e.g., PointClickCare) is an asset.
Working Conditions:
Physically demanding: includes walking, standing, bending, lifting.
May be exposed to infectious diseases and other workplace hazards.
Shift work required: days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
