Registered Practical Nurse Outpatient Clinic

Job Description

The Registered Practical Nurse will work in the Outpatient clinic setting under a variety of clinic types as follows: Gynaecology, general surgery, hand clinic, urology, ophthalmology, family practice, acute procedural clinic, ENT clinic and Fracture clinic. Work flow and assignment may vary based on operational needs and business demands and will be assigned by the unit manager or team lead.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Employee will be required to have extensive knowledge and detail into all clinic type operations and workflows
  • Direct care involved: transfusions, assessments, vital signs, medication management, vac therapy, wound care, splinting, casting, patient education, interdepartmental communication (X-ray/inpatient units/MDRD), Transfer of accountability, Documentation, specimen collection, sterile tray set up, bladder installations, Cerner order entry
  • Work as part of team and be flexible with patient assignments
  • Education e-learning, laser safety modules, safe use of cautery principles
  • Contribute to accreditation initiatives and/or departmental workflow improvements/efficiencies.
  • Collaborate with team members/team lead
  • Works closely with surgeon and care team to develop and deliver on an individualized plan of care for each patient
  • Involve the patient as a partner in their care
  • Keep the team lead/surgeon informed of any changes to the plan of care or patient condition
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
  • Current Registration with College of Nurses
  • Completion of a Registered Practical Nursing Program at an accredited college is required
  • Casted course required
  • Knowledge of different clinic types/procedures/sets up required
  • Knowledge in basic splinting, orthopedic emergencies, immobilization of limbs, traction, cast care, cast application and removal & reductions required
  • IV course required
Experience:
  • One year of Outpatient Clinic experience required
  • One year of Fracture Clinic experience required
  • Knowledge of aseptic principles, including tray set up and assisting surgeons
  • Surgical experience preferred
  • Perioperative course preferred
  • Laser safety training preferred
  • Knowledge of Safe Electrocautery principles/procedure preferred
  • Additional nursing skills required: recent experience with complex wound care, assessments/applications and maintenance of VAC therapy preferred
