Position Summary
The Mental Health Day Program is currently seeking a Permanent Part-Time Registered Practical Nurse to join their healthcare team.

Department/Unit/Program Description
Under the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario within their full scope of practice; the RPN will report to the manager and will function as a member of the Mental Health Interdisciplinary Team and as such will be involved with cases of a complex clinical nature. This position will be responsible for: assessing, evaluating care and treatment plans; discharge plans; implementing care plans, preventative treatments, Day Program intake, education, and/or supportive care; providing crisis intervention on a 1:1 basis and/or group setting; participating in team conferences; staff meetings and professional development activities; maintaining appropriate case records and program statistics; participating in the planning and evaluation of the MH program and performing other duties as required. A portion of the work will be conducted outside of the hospital in the community.
Ross Memorial Hospital qualifies for the Government of Canada's Student Loan Forgiveness Program. Nurses may be eligible to receive up to $30,000 in Canada Student Loan forgiveness
Essential Qualifications
RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing with demonstrated knowledge of College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice and commitment to maintaining reflective practice standards
Mental Health Certificate
Three (3) years current nursing experience (including medication administration) in an inpatient or outpatient environment working with individuals who have a serious and persistent mental illness
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), on hire
Must have current unrestricted drivers license and access to reliable insured vehicle
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate
Demonstrated experience in motivational interviewing
Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Standards of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, as well as relevant policies and legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Health Care Consent Act (HCCA), Substitute Decision Maker Act (SDM), etc.
Excellent and comprehensive Biopsychosocial assessment skills
Excellent and in depth knowledge of psychiatric illnesses frequently cared for in Schedule 1 facilities
Excellent and in-depth knowledge of psychopharmacologic treatment, able to demonstrate knowledge of the various classifications, significant side effects, relevant nursing interventions, etc. related to psychotropic medications
Concurrent Disorder knowledge/experience
Demonstrated competence within the full scope of practice of a Registered Practical Nurse (CNO-APIE) in the provision of assessment, planning of care, medications, interventions and documentation and evaluation of care needs
Proven ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
Proven excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral/written communication skills
Demonstrated excellent organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution and critical thinking abilities
Ability to provide transitional support with such activities as bridging support, service brokerage, supportive counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, linking to existing community mental health resources and/or addictions, securing housing, facilitating temporary returns to hospital when required
Ability to undertake periodic follow-up on clients (as determined useful on a case by case basis) and provide and receive consultation with the community mental health/addiction agencies
Demonstrates understanding of compliance with, and commitment to, patient safety, policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for patients
Experience will include: interviewing; rehabilitative comprehensive assessment; ability to initiate and maintain therapeutic relationships; supportive counseling; access to community resources; knowledge of housing services, addiction services and knowledge of related legislation and crisis intervention
The ability to work with clients of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds
Computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, email and Internet search engines, OCAN, RAI
Proven good attendance record with the capability of maintaining this same standard
Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job as per current Physical Demands Analysis
Preferred Qualifications
Trained in EPIC - training can be provided, but must pass required testing.
Hours of Work
Available to work eight (8) hour, day and night shifts, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
