About the Position
As a member of the resident/participant/client support team, the RPN assists in the assessing, planning and implementation and evaluation of care. Assumes significant responsibility in ensuring continuity of care through recording and reporting.
Reporting to the Director of Quality Risk & Education, the RPN is responsible for the provision of individualized physical and emotional care and support for residents/participants and clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpersonal Responsibilities

  • Communicates effectively and maintains a good working relationship with all personnel.
  • Fosters a team spirit
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt to changing priorities and serves as a role model in current nursing trends and practices.
  • Participates in committees, as required.
  • Respond immediately when portable phone is ringing when on shift or on call
  • Participates in quality improvement, risk management, infection control, and health and safety activities within the Quality Risk and Education Department.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of the individualized plans of care, when care needs are well-defined with predictable outcomes
  • Consults with the Director of Quality, Risk and Education or appropriate health care professionals when care needs become more complex, with unpredictable outcomes
  • Provides and/or assists with personal care, as required.
  • Reviews physicians' orders; arranges for treatments, medications and other therapeutic services as needed.
  • Documents Clinical Records in an accurate and concise matter in accordance with CNO Standards
  • Completes Incident Reports accurately and promptly
  • Assesses residents and reports promptly to the Director of Quality, Risk and Education and appropriate member within the care team/family member of any changes in a resident's/participant's/client's condition.
  • Administers medication, controls narcotics and/or controlled substances in accordance with established procedures.
  • Participates in Nursing Continuous Quality Improvement audits
  • Carries out nursing procedures in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards and evidence-based practice
  • Adheres to Ministry of Health Standards, MCCSS and The Salvation Army Standards, policies and procedures of The Village.
  • Demonstrates and shares nursing best practices in daily routines.
  • Provides assistance in taking residents/participants/clients to medical appointments when needed.
  • Performs other related duties, as required.
Quality Improvement/Risk Management
  • Ensure personal and professional growth. (i.e. Surge, Praesidium, CCOHS etc.)
Environment
  • Maintaining a safe and secure environment for the individuals we support, co-workers, volunteers, and visitors by following facility policies and procedures.
Human Resources
  • Assists with the orientation of new employees and actively participates in the training of qualified front line staff and new RPNs, as required.
  • Provides input to the Director of Quality, Risk and Education regarding performance of front-line staff.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Current registration as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Proof of successful completion of the Medication Administration Course for RPN's.
  • Post RPN education in dementia and Supervisory skills is an asset.
  • Current CPR Certificate.
  • Significant experience in developmental services and mental health services
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • Ability to safely and efficiently dispense resident's medication.
  • Demonstrated sound clinical knowledge/ judgement
  • Ability to organize workload using time management principles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and software applications.

  • Must possess the personal qualities and attitudes that respect and maintain the spirit, dignity and individuality of the residents.
  • Sound clinical judgment, tact, and personal ability to work cooperatively and effectively with residents, family members, physicians, volunteers and co-workers as a member of an Interdisciplinary Care Team.
  • Self-motivated ability to work, carry out responsibilities with minimum direction, and to use good judgment in making appropriate decisions.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to carry out responsibilities and able to cope effectively with stress.
  • Ability to develop and maintain rapport with individuals we support.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all staff and maintain a working climate that is positive, respectful and mutually supportive.
  • Works closely with other disciplines to ensure that the people we support have their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs met.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $54,176 to $67,720 with the ability to progress to a maximum of $81,264. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
