The Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a part-time, permanent Registered Practical Nurse to work in the Forensic Secure Unit A (FSUA). As a member of an inter-professional team, you will provide client-centered psychiatric and general nursing care and ensure security, safety of the client care environment, and practice in accordance with the CNO standards, as well as CAMH Policies and Practice Model. Using a primary nursing model, you will collaborate with the primary nurse to perform ongoing assessments, develop, implement and evaluate the interprofessional plan of client care for clients who may be suffering from mental illness and who are detained under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board (ORB). The Registered Practical Nurse will be responsible for working with patients from diverse backgrounds, contributing to program development; and provide education support and supervision to students. You will liaise with other services in the Forensic Division and community agencies to coordinate care for clients. You will have sound knowledge of clinical and risk management services to adults under the jurisdiction of the ORB. You will develop, implement and monitor risk management plans and ensure compliance with the ORB disposition. You will be able to work with clients from diverse populations; contribute to program development and provide educational support to students. You will participate in the preparation of ORB reports and implement the unit's risk management processes. Your skills include the ability to make behavioral observations, mental status and physical assessments, monitoring patient's response to pharmaceutical care interventions, documentation and ongoing communication with other team members and charge nurses. You will have sound knowledge of crisis intervention, addiction issues, forensic psychiatry, risk assessments, and severe and persistent mental illness. Your strengths include an ability to perform assessments and develop, implement and evaluate interprofessional client centered care plans. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements. This position involves 12- hour shift rotation working days, evenings and nights as well as weekend work. This position is located at 1001 Queen Street West.


Job Requirements




The successful candidate must be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. A current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate is also required. The candidate must have medication administration certification or completion of an RPN education preparation program that includes medication administration. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to develop the Nurse-Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse inter-professional team. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing, addiction issues and risk assessments. You have demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the prevention and management of disturbed behaviour. Psychiatric nursing experience with individuals with mental illness and/or addictions is required. You will have an understanding of how to develop and implement forensic risk assessment plans and a fundamental understanding of the forensic legal and health systems. The successful candidate will be a self-directed team player who is highly organized and has the communication and interpersonal skills that enable them to work within an inter-professional collaborative team environment. Experience working with individuals from diverse ethno cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is also required. Computer literacy is required. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language is an asset.
