Position Overview



Reporting directly to the Director of Care/Associate Director of Care, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) assumes responsibility as a team leader for an assigned unit, under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Primary duties include the safe provision of medications and treatments to residents.



Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Perform nursing skills in compliance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Practice Take responsibility for the management of the nursing unit on a tour of duty under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Assist with implementation of prescribed medical regime as per the resident's Plan of Care (POC). Take responsibility for activities delegated by the Registered Nurse. Continuously observe and update the assessment of the resident by using critical nursing assessment skills and all available resources. Contribute to the development, modification and implementation of the resident's POC. Utilize all available resources to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care given and revise the POC in consultation with the registered nurse. Maintain records for each resident in compliance with policies of Sherwood Park Manor, documentation standards, and current legislation. Provide effective support and supervision for non-registered staff and students Perform additional related duties as required

Skills and Knowledge:

Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Experience working in Long Term Care desirable. Current CPR and First Aid certification. Ability to supervise and oversee Personal Support Workers (PSWs) in a Team Lead role. Experience using PointClickCare an asset.

Soft Skills:

Maintain professional collaborative relationships with other multidisciplinary team members AND therapeutic nurse-client relationship with the resident and their family. Demonstrate sound leadership skills in problem solving and decision-making. Act as an effective mentor to new RPN and PSW staff and provide ongoing encouragement and support as needed. Demonstrate effective, professional oral and written communication. The ability to manage emergency situations effectively and efficiently. Have the capacity to deal with distractions and multiple demands on one's time. The maturity to assume accountability for one's own actions.

Communicate effectively with residents, families, and healthcare teams, ensuring clarity and compassion. Listen actively to residents' needs, concerns, and preferences, offering emotional support and reassurance. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of care provided, including any changes in the resident's condition.

Follow established protocols for infection prevention and control, including hand hygiene and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ensure the resident's living environment is safe, clean, and free of hazards to prevent falls or accidents. Respond appropriately to emergencies and accidents.

Resident-Centered Care

Respect and support residents' preferences, values, and cultural beliefs in the care plan. Advocate for the needs of the resident, ensuring their rights and wishes are respected in all interactions. Tailor care to meet resident needs, maintaining flexibility and adaptability in caregiving.

Teamwork and Collaboration

Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, family members, and other support workers to deliver holistic care. Participate in team meetings and care plan discussions to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care. Share knowledge and insights with colleagues to improve the overall care environment.

Time Management and Organizational Skills

Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to provide care in a timely manner. Maintain an organized system for tracking resident care/or duties. Adapt to changes in schedule or care needs, managing multiple tasks without compromising quality of care.

Cultural Sensitivity and Inclusivity

Show respect for diverse cultural, religious, and personal beliefs and values. Provide care that is sensitive to the needs of the resident from various backgrounds. Maintain a non-judgmental and inclusive attitude, ensuring all residents and colleagues feel valued and respected.

Professionalism and Ethical Conduct

Maintain confidentiality and adhere to privacy laws and ethical guidelines. Demonstrate a high standard of professionalism in appearance, behavior, and communication. Exhibit empathy, patience, and respect in all interactions with residents, families, and colleagues.

Working Conditions:



All while showing compassion and care to the Manor's residents:Stand and walk for long periods Sit for short periods Bend, stoop, and carry Push/pull wheeled equipment Safely transfer and lift (up to 20 kg.) in accordance with Sherwood Park Manor's transfer and lift procedures Work day, evening, night shifts; weekends, holidays and for call-in shifts. Must have an up to date 2 -step TB test.
