TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES - Operating Room Perioperative Nursing

In recognition of the shortage of qualified Operating Room nurses, St. Joseph's Hospital is offering to sponsor nurses registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario who are interested in working in the Operating Room. Candidates selected to participate in this 13 week program will be provided with a conditional offer of full-time employment. To successfully complete this course, candidates must meet both academic and clinical evaluation standards. For internal candidates, successful completion of the 60 tour (450 hour) trial period is required prior to final confirmation in this role. External candidates' confirmation will be in accordance with the probation period under terms of the ONA collective agreement.

Selected applicants will be required to attend the full-time external Perioperative Nursing Certificate Program. Tuition and full salaries will be paid by St. Joseph's Health Centre for this 13 week program.

Candidates who successfully complete the Perioperative Nursing Certificate Program will then be transferred to the full-time, Registered Nurse position in the Operating Room. Successful candidates will be required to commit and remain in the full-time, Registered Nurse position in the Operating Room unit for 24 months, following the effective date of placement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have current General Class (Practicing) Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Must have current BLS Certification
• A minimum of 2 years recent Inpatient Surgical, ICU or Emergency Room experience required
• Demonstrated good communication skills/command of English, both verbal and written
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, preferred
• Evidence of good work ethics and an excellent attendance record
• Demonstrated knowledge and successful application of adult learning principles an asset
• Must be able to work independently and have the ability to work collaboratively with other professions / disciplines in a team environment
• Critical thinking skills with ability to reflect on appropriate actions acquired through education and professional practice experience
• Expert communication skills with clients, families, the inter-professional team and all other healthcare personnel required
• Must be willing to cross train in more than one specialty service within the Operating Room
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment and work flexible hours including on call shifts
• Satisfactory attendance record
