Job Description


Under the general direction of the Manager, Patient Care Services, the Registered Nurse assists in the delivery of treatment services and promotes healthy lifestyle choices for Schizophrenia Inpatient unit. The nurse functions interdependently with the other members of the Team within a health promotion framework.Duties:

  • As a member of the Schizophrenia Inpatient unit, you will use best-practice and innovative approaches to provide client-oriented, nursing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services.
  • Conduct comprehensive client assessments (includes discipline specific and multi disciplinary assessment instruments, client self-assessment, family assessment in the environment of the client\xe2\x80\x99s choice, reports by other service providers, etc).
  • In collaboration with other Schizophrenia Inpatient unit Team members and the client, develop individualized client treatment/ rehabilitation plans.
  • Assume responsibility for the treatment, rehabilitation and support of assigned clients within the context of the Schizophrenia Inpatient unit Team.
  • Provide direct assistance with symptom management (includes preparation and administering of medications, individual clinical relationship, etc.).
  • Provide direct assistance with employment, social relations and/or activities of daily living (includes in vivo skill teaching, environmental modifications, side-by-side assistance, etc.).
  • Identify patient\xe2\x80\x99s goals on an ongoing basis, and facilitate weekly groups using the principles of Illness Management Recovery (IMR), an evidence based recovery program.
  • Facilitate an optimally supportive environment including assistance with: meeting basic needs, a supportive social environment, and supportive family relationships.
  • Participate in daily Schizophrenia Inpatient unit meetings to review clients and organize daily assignments.
  • Complete and maintain all necessary documentation as per nursing and professional standards (includes client assessments, treatment/rehab plans, RAI-MH, medical records, progress reports, ensuring lab forms completed correctly, client kardex/log, client contact schedule, etc.).
  • Monitor and evaluate client progress and revise treatment/rehabilitation plans as indicated.
  • Ensure continuity of client care is maintained through exchange of information and communication with the client, family members, and other services providers who may be involved with the client. Secure resources by preparing reports, completing application forms/letters as required.
  • Participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of program services to meet the needs of the program.
  • Complete all required non-clinical administrative documentation (i.e.: workload measurement, quality improvement, forms, etc.).
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with local employers, service providers, stakeholders and families.
  • Keep up-to-date, regarding professional standards by reviewing current literature, attending workshops/seminars, networking with colleagues, and participate in the teaching and supervision of students.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the Royal\xe2\x80\x99s Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
  • Other assigned duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.
  • BScN is preferred.
  • Current practice according to the Standards of Practice for Nurses in Ontario.
  • Minimum of 3 years nursing experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing.
  • Clear understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
  • Previous experience in community mental health is an asset.
  • Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing is preferred.
  • WHIMIS update in preceding 12 months.
  • Fire training update in preceding 12 months.
  • CPR certification within the last 12 months.
  • Completion of Suicide Prevention Training and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Knowledge and application of Illness Management Recovery principles is an asset.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources in Ottawa-Carleton.
  • Evidence of client directed practice of service of delivery.
  • Experience in Psychosocial Rehabilitation techniques.
  • Group leadership skills and experience an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player; comfortable with interdependence, consensus decision making and accountability to team needs.
  • Excellent observation, assessment and crisis intervention skills.
  • Must complete RAI-MH training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MH system is required on an ongoing basis.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression/comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset
