JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION: REGISTERED NURSE/FACILITY MANAGERREPORTS TO: Director of CareROLE: The Registered Nurse is accountable to the Director of Care for the quality of resident care, management of the nursing units and the management of all health care and services required to meet the needs of the Home's residents in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.Ensures and promotes the provision of resident centered services and personal care services are available to meet the needs of the resident as follows:a) Supports and helps provide a Resident Advocacy Program though the promotion and respect of the Bill of Rights.b) Promotes the philosophy and practices of resident centeredness and humanizing in all residents' encounters and decisions.c) Promotes the Resident's Bill of Rights.d) Respects and uses sensitivity in spiritual, cultural and ethnic aspects of a resident's life.e) Maintains a wellness perspective.f) Supports residents in achieving quality experiences - personal and social.g) Facilitates relationships between and among residents, relatives, staff and community.h) Seeks opportunities for resident participation in decisions that affect the resident's rights and lifestyle.i) Monitors and improves attitudes and behaviors of family and staff to ensure inclusion of residents in decisions regarding their care.j) Creates opportunities for individuals to make choices and to take actions that will enhance the resident's sense of mastery.k) Creates a comfortable and safe environment that provides opportunities for privacy, dignity, control and maintenance of personal lifestyle.l) Communicates with and supports families in their involvement and participation. m) Ensures an environment with ambiance conducive to the provision and practice of therapeutically effective resident health care yet be unobtrusive.2. Provides nursing administration as follows:a) Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Services within the Home.b) Assumes responsibility for medication administration, narcotic control, application of treatments and dressings, transcription of Physician orders, reordering of medications, and other skills.c) Provides input to the development and revision of nursing policies and procedures and communicates changes to staff.d) Develops objectives for the nursing unit compatible with the overall purposes and goals of the nursing department and the institution.e) Guides the health care team to provide effective care for all individuals on the nursing unit.f) Promotes the philosophy and practices of resident centeredness in all resident encounters and decisions.g) Promotes the Resident's Bill of Rights.h) Respects and uses sensitivity in spiritual, cultural and ethnic aspects of a resident's life.i) Empowers the nursing staff with the responsibility to plan effective care for each resident with resident input.j) Organizes and coordinates nursing with hospital, home and community to meet individual, family and group needs.k) Participates in the Home programs (e.g.) Occupational Health and Safety Program, Quality Improvement, Fire Safety, WHMIS.l) Gives input into any revisions to the job descriptions and functions of members of the nursing department.m) Is responsible for staff scheduling resulting from sick callers and approval of shift changes.3. Provides for quality Human Resources as follows:a) The RN/Facility Manager Participates in interviewing of non-registered, registered and management staff for the Nursing Department.b) Promotes a cooperative working environment.c) Facilitates team building and promotes change and innovative ideas.d) Conducts performance appraisals within Nursing departmente) Develops opportunities within the organization for staff to advance within the system.f) Establishes and maintains good human relations with professional and non-professional staff, residents, families, volunteers and the community.g) Assesses the nursing needs of individuals, families and groups, the development of nursing histories, resident care plans and team conferences.h) Assists with the development of orientation, in-service and continuing education plans of nursing and non-nursing personnel.i) Participates in the process of labor relations.j) Provides a process for management/employee conflict resolution.k) Functions in accordance with Guidelines for Ethical Behavior in Nursing.l) Coordinates and chairs admission and review Resident Care Conference.m) Fully knowledgeable of Emergency Codes and conducts Emergency Codes after hours or in absents of senior management.4. To ensure effective financial resource management as follows:a) Provides input into the need and use of equipment and supplies required for residents with physical and cognitive deficits.b) Procures health related equipment and supplies.c) Assists with inventory control.d) Assists with the preparation of the nursing budgets and supports the budget of the Home area.5. Promotes interrelationships as follows:a) Communicates with and supports families in their involvement and participation.b) Maintains communication between staff and nursing administration and other departments.c) Encourages and assists nursing personnel to identify learning needs.6. Has responsibility and authority for applying the nursing process in planning and providing care for individuals, families or group:a) Assesses needs of individual or groups.b) Plans assignments for self, registered and non-registered staff.c) Supervises the resident care in accordance with current and accepted standards.d) Serves as resource person for other nursing staff in identifying and solving nursing or resident care problems.e) Evaluates the care provided and participates with other nursing personnel in evaluation of resident care.f) Teaches other nursing personnel, individual residents, their families and groups.g) Promotes an environment in which the health care team works cooperatively and supportively.h) Uses scientific knowledge in a systematic approach to identifying problems and in problem solving.i) Communicates and documents professional practice.j) Seeks out opportunities to maintain competency and to continuously learn, taking an active role in continuous quality improvement.7. Participates in Quality Management in nursing services as follows:a) Contributes to the strategic planning to set goals and monitor Quality Planb) Assists and supports the Nursing Services and all members of the Multidisciplinary Team as needed in planning, implementing and ongoing evaluation of our Resident Centered Model.c) Ensures that the appropriate Senior Management is apprised of any problems on a timely fashion as delegated by the Director of Care.d) Conducts audits.e) Conducts Home rounds as required (Evening & Night)f) Renew and improve issues from the satisfaction surveysg) Participates in quality improvement efforts.ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP Working in team cooperation with:Director of Care and Senior ManagersAdministratorQUALIFICATIONS: Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of OntarioMust be fully vaccinated as per ministry requirementCertification in Gerontology and current membership with GNA and RNAO is desirable.Minimum of one-year experience in geriatric, rehabilitation or long-term care as Charge Nurse.Demonstrates an understanding of current trends and concepts relative to professional nursing.Multilingual facility an asset.Facilitate in both official languages would be a definite asset.WORKING CONDITIONS: Combination of natural light and fluorescent lightingLifting alone maximum of 50 lbsLifting with assistance maximum of 250 lbs (150 usual)Pushing/pulling contents that weigh a maximum of 150 lbsCrouching, kneeling, stooping/bending for short periods of time - minor job functionWalking, climbing stairs - major job functionStanding for lengths of time, up to 3 hours - major functionCarries and transports objects of various sizes, to a max of 25 lbs (usual 5-15) - minor job functionExposure to sharps and bio-medical wastesInterruptions with personal life**other duties as requiredJob Types: Part-time, Casual
