Position Summary

The Registered Nurse in Oncology/Blood Transfusion Clinic practices at a high level of autonomy and accountability in collaboration with oncologists, physicians and the interdisciplinary team to provide a continuum of patient care from prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, education, follow-up, palliation, bereavement and survivorship. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a delivery model in accordance with the philosophy, policies and standards of care of Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and all relevant legislation.

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) required.
  • Completion of DeSouza Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course required - only candidates who have successful completed the course will be considered
  • Current BCLS required
  • Completion of DeSouza Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course, or working towards completion within one (1) year is required.
  • Additional formal educational requirements/certifications as required in department
  • Functions independently within scope of practice
  • IV and Chemotherapy Administration Certification essential
  • Post Diploma Education, Patient Assessment preferred
  • CANO/ONS membership preferred
  • CNA Certification in Oncology an asset (must be eligible to write certification exam within two years of hire)
  • 2 years current experience working in adult ambulatory oncology and/or chemotherapy and administration preferred with blood transfusion clinic experience preferred
  • Current progressive experience in Outpatient Chemotherapy Administration essential (vesicants/non-vesicants)
  • Central Venous Access Devise (CVAD) and peripheral IV experience required
  • Ability and experience demonstrated through positive attendance, performance appraisals and work history
  • Demonstrated excellent critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills required
  • Demonstrated competency in peripheral IV and CVAD access and maintenance required
  • Demonstrates understanding of working successfully in teams required
  • Demonstrates Critical Thinking
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills in both, written and verbal, and interpersonal skills to interact with a range of individuals in a variety of situations, which require tact, discretion and confidentiality across the care continuum.
  • Sound problem solving, communication (oral and written), conflict resolution and decision making skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Computer literacy in current software applications Cerner required
  • Computer literacy in current software applications ARIA preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to the professional growth and development of self and others
  • Demonstrated commitment to the concepts of Continuous Quality Improvement and Customer Service
  • Chemotherapy assessment and administration
  • Demonstrates commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through Continuing Education Programs and Self Directed Learning Opportunities.
