460 Manning Avenue Toronto, Ontario Tel# 416.537.5841M6G-2V7 Fax# 416.537.8498 Early Childhood Educator Position: Early Childhood Educator Reports to: Director/SupervisorGeneral ResponsibilitiesPlans and implements in consultation with the Director/Supervisor age appropriate programs to enhance the children\xe2\x80\x99s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act and Education Act. Incorporates learning experiences designed to meet the individual needs of the children. Works with the Childcare Consultant from Child Development Institute to provide programs for children with special needs in the center. Provides a physically safe and emotionally supportive environment showing sensitivity to individual needs of the children in all aspects of development. Ensures the philosophy of the program is upheld.Work Procedures

  • Works in consultation with the director/supervisor and other staff to provide age appropriate programs to enhance the children\xe2\x80\x99s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development.
  • Provides a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities. Establishes and carriers out a schedule that incorporates child-directed activity, care routines and transition times.
  • Uses a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating and reinforcing.
  • Develops and implements programs to promote and enhance creativity in all areas; arts and crafts, dramatic play, cognitive play, emotional awareness, music appreciation, science and nature, fine and gross motor and sensory activities.
  • Provides a variety of materials to encourage large and small muscle development for indoor and outdoor play.
  • Provides positive social experiences including; sharing cooperation, respect for others and self sufficiency; facilitates an understanding of a variety of cultures and value systems.
  • Provides play materials that actively promote anti-racist and non-sexist integrations and attitudes.
  • Plans and carries out activities that encourage problem solving.
  • Feeds children/toddlers ensuring they are adequately nourished and any special dietary requirements are met.
  • Diapers and toilet trains children.
  • Instructs and assists children in washing, dressing, toileting, eating, etc. to develop self-help skills.
  • Conducts daily health check of children; records illness and contacts parents. Administers medication as authorized by physicians and maintains records of all medications administered.
  • Administers first aid, as required, and record the same.
  • Accompanies children on field trips.
  • Responsible for group during fire drill/lock down drill.
  • Conducts fair, progressive and consistent disciplinary methods in accordance with programs philosophy.
  • Discusses children\xe2\x80\x99s progress, behaviour, health with parents, designated family members and school staff while maintaining confidentiality. Promotes parental involvement.
  • Completes children\xe2\x80\x99s progress charts for parents.
  • Assists in preparing reports for children with special needs.
  • Obtains appropriate supplies for planned activities; checks that the activity area, toys and equipment are safe and sanitary; sets up activity area and tidies up after use.
  • Keep classroom clean. Organize all containers with labels.
  • Keep storage rooms clean and organized. Place all toys and props in good condition in plastic containers.
  • Monitors all areas frequented by the children for safety, hygienic conditions, including washrooms, playground, etc.
  • Observes and assesses children\xe2\x80\x99s progress and behaviour to ensure programs meet identified individual and group needs. Recommends referral of children to the Childcare Consultant special needs as necessary.
  • Assists in the evaluation of programs and recommends new and/or modified programming to improve effectiveness in meeting the needs of children.
  • Participates in educational assessment conferences with outside agencies and makes individual program recommendations.
  • Assists with administrative tasks; recording attendance, recommending purchases of new equipment, receiving and recording goods, answering telephone, documenting serious occurrences, accident reports, medication administered, etc.
  • Responsible for observing and evaluating students. Assigns tasks to teaching assistants, students and volunteers as necessary.
  • Participates in team meetings as required.
  • Participates in annual performance review process.
  • Assists in planning and implanting programs for staff development.
  • Attends parent education, professional development workshops.
  • Attends staff meetings, taking and transcribing minutes on a rotational basis. Attends board meetings general meetings and other functions.
  • Assists in promoting, helping with and follow-up for fundraising events.
  • Spends and records petty cash money on a monthly basis.
  • Demonstrates proper procedures for Early Childhood Education students.
  • Keeps aware of policy changes. Adheres to staff and parent policies as set by the Board of Directors.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years experience in licensed childcare programs.
  • Demonstrates ability to direct, instruct and care for children.
  • Ability to handle emergencies, crises, hostile behaviour.
  • Ability to maintain control in frustrating situations.
  • Ability to accommodate competing demands.
  • Ability to use professional judgment on a daily basis within guidelines established by the Child Care and Early Years and Education Act, regional and program policies.
  • Ability to maintain neat and accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with children, parents, staff and teachers.
  • Responsible for maintaining confidentiality of all information related to children, parents and staff.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, to work at the height of children.
  • Ability to carry/lift children and carry/lift/move moderately heavy items.
  • Willingness to work in conditions involving exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, frequent high noise levels, occasional inclement weather.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Child Care and Early Years and Education Act and the ability to meet the specifications of these Acts and any other regulations that applies to this work.
Minimum Educational Requirements
  • Graduation from an-approved program in Early Childhood Education or provincially recognized equivalent.
  • Holder of a valid standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Registered with College of ECE\xe2\x80\x99s
  • Must provide clear health and Police Reference Checks as a condition of employment
Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 6 months Salary: $32.00 per hour Benefits:
