JOB TITLE: REGISTERED EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR

REPORTING

RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to the RECE in Charge.

PURPOSE:
Responsible for providing care and supervision to children ages 0 to 12 at the Early Learning Centres, through the planning and implementation of a program conducive to their emotional, physical, social and intellectual development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Implements programming based on emergent curriculum and the Ministry of Education's document "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years". This document incorporates the Four Foundations for Learning and Development: Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement and Expression.
Takes daily attendance and notes any illnesses, appointments or special information for children attending.
Ensures that books, toys and equipment are in safe and functional repair and reports to RECE In Charge any needed repairs. Keeps all play areas, indoors and outdoors equipment clean, safe, orderly and aesthetically pleasing.
Administers first aid as required and fills out correct incident and ill health forms as per policy guidelines.
Maintains positive discipline by following procedures of Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014. Applies directives consistently to provide appropriate limits and positive reinforcement of acceptable behavior.
Educates children on safety, evacuation and fire drill procedures and assists in carrying out drills.
Exchanges information with parents regarding children's needs and schedules. Responds to parents questions and concerns about child's daily activities and behavior. Refers major concerns and problems to the RECE in Charge or designate.
Cleans playrooms by sweeping, vacuuming and mopping. Maintains cupboards, shelves, books, toys and other equipment, restocking craft containers, supplies, books, etc. Disinfects washroom, toys and equipment as required.
Responsible for outdoor play equipment, ensuring all are secured in locked shed at the end of day.
Assists children in maintaining correct hygiene procedures such as washing hands and face, changing soiled pants, etc. and assists and instructs children in mastering basic self-sufficiency skills such as dressing and personal hygiene. Conducts and assures adherence to scheduled day care routines such as washroom, lunch-time, snack-time, dressing, rest-time and play-time.
Arranges material and furnishings, activity and rest areas on a daily basis in preparation for scheduled daily activities.
Actively participates in daily programming, responding to children's individual needs and interests.
Supervises children at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
Monitors and reports children's health and well-being to the RECE In Charge or designate.
Informs RECE In Charge of children's absences, illnesses and incidences which have occurred within program.
Secures building and contents against loss or damages by ensuring windows and doors are locked at close-up.
Provided positive guidance techniques for all children ensuring the 4 foundations of "How Does Learning Happen?" are implemented.
Ensure daily communication with staff, Resource Teacher, RECE In Charge and/or Early Years Quality Assurance Coordinator regarding programming for all children.
Completes and files reports regarding non-routine occurrences (such as accidents, illness) as required in conjunction with Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014.
Collaborate with partnering community agencies who provide programming and support to the children attending KDSB Early Learning programs.
Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities such as workshops, conferences and meetings. Prepare report and share with colleagues and/or staff information learned during these opportunities.
Take an active role in regular network and team/staff meetings as required.
Collaborate with others in maintaining a positive working environment.
Perform other related duties as required.

SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the Ministry of Education's document "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years".
Knowledge of relevant legislation, program policies and procedures.
Knowledge and understanding of child development.
Understanding, awareness and inclusive of all cultures within programming.

JUDGEMENT:
Work is performed under the RECE In Charge or designate.
Effective problem solving skills and sound decision making skills.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountable to the RECE In Charge, to provide quality care, programming and supervision to children attending KDSB Early Learning programs.

CONTACTS:
Regular contact with parents/guardians.
Regular contact with Early Years program staff.
Regular contact with community agencies/organizations and partners.
Regular contact with other KDSB staff.
Some contact with Ministry of Education staff.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
Diploma in Early Childhood Education from a recognized college, registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators, and one (1) year experience in a child care setting.
Current First Aid, including Infant/Child CPR.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Up to date Immunization Record including TB skin test.
Obtain Safe Food Handling certification.
Required to possess and maintain a valid Class "G" Ontario driver's license and to have access to a reliable vehicle for travel or the ability to rent.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works 60% of time indoors in a shared workspace, and 40% outdoors, supervising children in play areas or on field trips.
Work will include direct interactions with children, which can be physically demanding. The Registered Early Childhood Educator may be lifting and carrying children and equipment, and may need to spend time sitting on the floor, or on child-sized furniture. The Registered Early Childhood Educator may at times also be in contact with children who are ill or contagious, and take appropriate steps to ensure the health and safety of other children, parents, staff and themselves.
Work can at times include smells associated with toileting, and children who are ill. Work can also be stressful and demanding, with multiple situations occurring at once. The Registered Early Childhood Educator must be prepared to potentially work beyond normal daily and weekly scheduled hours.
Major daily demand for extensive physical strength and agility related to repeated requirements for lifting/carrying of children and equipment such as cots and outdoor playground equipment, pushing/pulling children on swings, stooping/kneeling when attempting to attain eye contact, twisting/turning, crouching/crawling, walking/running when supervising and interacting with children. Continuous listening/visual scanning when supervising children/listening to children's questions watching quick moving children.
Frequent disruptions and interruptions from telephone, people wanting information, parents, and children demanding attention or to settle disputes between children.
