Your Opportunity:

Community Oral Health seeks a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) who enjoys working with a dynamic team. The RDA is a front line representative working with the Calgary Zone oral health team (dental hygienists, dental assistants and administrative staff), collaboratively and independently, to support and provide preventive services outlined in the provincial Oral Health Action Plan (OHAP), which focuses on providing services to the most vulnerable in the community. Responsibilities include visual oral health assessment and fluoride varnish application for preschool and school children; dental sealant applications for students in targeted schools; anticipatory guidance with oral health messaging; referral as appropriate; and participating in and supporting of overall team work. The RDA provides services to individuals, families and groups in a variety of settings, such as schools and community health clinics. With the variety of settings comes a variety of work - some days with quite varied tasks and others involving repetitive tasks. Service delivery may require lots of walking, climbing flights of stairs, sitting, standing, and/or bending for long periods of time, awkward and repetitive movements. Service delivery involves transporting supplies and equipment. The RDA will be required to pack, lift, move and transport supplies and equipment to various work sites, with some equipment being heavy and awkward (e.g. mobile dental delivery units and chairs). Driving can involve both urban and rural travel. Compensation for work-related travel will be provided.

Description:

As a Dental Assistant, you will receive and prepare patients for treatment. You will prepare instruments and materials required, perform intra-oral procedures and chair-side assistance during dental procedures. You will maintain cleanliness of the dental area and perform routine maintenance. You will also provide oral health treatment and education to patients. You may perform billing and pre-authorization of insurance claims and participate in the development of educational resource materials. You will maintain dental charts, records and databases.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a certificate from an accredited Dental Assisting Program. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Dental Assistants (CADA). Additional Required Qualifications:

Proven ability and desire to consistently demonstrate and model the AHS Values to promote a safe, productive and healthy work environment. Minimum 2 years' experience as a Registered Dental Assistant. Preference will be given to applicants with recent community health dental program experience. Experience working with young children, diverse cultures, and marginalized populations. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as an effective member of a dental health team and with allied professionals. Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a wide variety of people in a health care environment with professionalism and respect. Ability to communicate effectively with clients of varied backgrounds and needs. Demonstrated ability to be attentive to detail. Demonstrated ability to keep records and information confidential, understanding legal requirements and how to secure information when transferring. Strong written and verbal communication skills in the English language. Well-developed organizational and time management skills. Ability to proficiently use basic computer systems - email, Microsoft programs. Experience with MEDITECH an asset. Maintains optimal Infection Prevention and Control. Current knowledge of dental assistant standards and treatment practices; maintains continuing competence program as set out by the CADA. Preferred Qualifications:

Experience providing preventive services such as fluoride varnish applications and pit and fissure sealants is preferred. Experience working in Public Health / Community Health Work experience in a school environment or child-care centre is an asset. Familiarity with various dental service providers/coverage - e.g. Alberta Works, Calgary Dental Treatment Clinics, local offices and organizations supporting access to dental care
