Job Description



The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the East Region Command is seeking a qualified individual for the Regional Media Relations Coordinator position. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will perform media relations activities within the region and act as a resource person to Regional Command Staff, unit/detachment commanders, Regional Community Services Coordinator and field personnel in the development and implementation of external and internal communication strategies.

Note: This is a temporary (6 month) assignment with the possibility of extension or permanency. This position is based at the East Region Headquarters in Smiths Falls. This is an operational position requiring a high level of engagement with senior leaders and stakeholders. The successful applicant will be required to report to OPP\'s East Regional Headquarters in Smiths Falls to perform their duties in accordance with OPP/OPS workplace policies.

What can I expect to do in this role?

  • To perform media relations activities within the region and act as a resource person to Regional Command Staff, unit/detachment commanders, Regional Community Services Coordinator and field personnel in the development and implementation of external and internal communication strategies.
  • Some travel within the province may be required.


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation.
  • Valid Ontario driver\'s license to be able to attend incidents, news conferences and training sessions.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of media relations as it relates to police investigations and Major Case Management and media relations principles to develop/advise on communication plans, release of information, media releases, media interviews, media conferences and key messages.
  • Knowledge of journalism principles and interview techniques to coordinate and prepare information for media interviews and to coach spokespeople. Job requires knowledge of public relations, promotion and marketing concepts and special events management in order to assist in the organization and coordination of related activities.
  • An understanding of contentious policing issues both internally and externally in order to research and draft OPP Briefing Notes, updates and other communication pieces as directed.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Windows, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint to produce written material and presentations. Job requires knowledge of digital photography and image editing to design or produce presentations, news articles, public education products and web content.
  • Knowledge of website management software and ability to post items to internet-based websites.
  • Knowledge of publishing standards, such as the Canadian Press Style Guide, and the Canadian Oxford Dictionary preferred spellings in order to coordinate all aspects of newsletter production including writing, editing, photography and layout.
  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to act as a resource person to consult and critique on matters related to specialty of work, to work collaboratively with committee members and community partners, to liaise with media contacts, and to deliver presentations and training.
  • Written communication skills to compose/edit correspondence, newsletters and Regional/Ministry briefing notes, public education products, media releases, social media content, print articles, speeches, communication plans and web content and to proofread material to ensure accuracy in grammar, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation and suitability of content, style and tone for intended audience.
  • Analytical and evaluative skills to determine potential impact of OPP publications and media coverage of OPP activities and to examine critical issues and summarize details in concise form according to established criteria
