The South Slave Divisional Education Council is looking for a positive, dynamic and experienced educational leader to provide service and supports to schools that meets the diverse educational needs of South Slave students. This position is a key member of a dedicated educational leadership team responsible for providing support to South Slave schools and local governing bodies. The successful applicant will be responsible to:
coordinating support and training for school level student support staff including program support teachers (PSTs), counselors, and education assistants (special needs and classroom assistants)
coordinating process and providing resources and assistance for the development and implementation of modified and individualized education plans (IEPs & SSPs)
coordinating educational assessments and support services for students identified with more unique needs, in collaboration with school staff, parents and partner agencies
working with school representatives, the other Inclusive Schooling Coordinator and the Assistant Superintendent to determine priorities, and develop and implement plans and programs that meet the diverse educational needs of South Slave students. Current priorities include implementation of the new inclusive schooling directive, student support handbook, and electronic IEP and SSP databases, and may include facilitation of the differentiated instruction, action research, and student assessment, evaluation & reportinginitiatives.
A B.Ed. degree, five years teaching experience, and expertise in implementing inclusive schooling for students with special needs are minimum requirements. The successful applicant will be expected to have specialization, training, or experience in: setting up modified and individualized education programs, and training other staff accordingly with intervention strategies; providing teaching demonstrations and coaching; workshop development, delivery, and facilitation, and; school leadership or program review, development and implementation. Specialist designation in educational psychology, reading recovery, speech language pathology, or other student support designations an asset. Preference will also be given to proficient educators with northern experience, excellent initiative, planning, organization, communication, facilitation, writing, and interpersonal skills, and a track record of effective classroom practice. S/he will be known for a high standard of professionalism, an ability to work independently, and will be a strong team player committed to working well with and earning the respect of school staffs. Extensive travel is a necessity.
Salary: dependent on qualifications-may range anywhere from $91,000 to $162,000 per annum, plus a very attractive benefits package including a Consultant Allowance of $5,185, a Northern Allowance of over $6,000, relocation, and a school work year. The position is based in either Fort Smith, NWT and serve staff and students in eight schools in the five South Slave communities on the southern shores of Great Slave Lake: Fort Resolution, Hay River, Katlodeeche, Lutsel K'e and Fort Smith. Located on the Alberta border, the Slave River, and gateway to the Wood Buffalo National Park, the South Slave offers a wide variety of winter and summer sporting and cultural activities, including kayaking, fishing, golf, skiing, curling, tennis, a swimming pool, movie theater and a library and many more amenities. Fort Smith is on the road system and has daily flights from Edmonton, Alberta.
