Job Description

Janssen Equipment Repair (JER) has specialized in intermodal temperature controlled equipment for over 25 years in Winnipeg. We're looking for an experienced reefer technician to join our growing team.

Reefer Technician Position



As a Reefer Technician you will work out of our shop and on-site at various customer locations throughout Winnipeg. This is a hands-on role working with diesel engines, refrigeration systems, and electrical components on railway intermodal equipment.

This role is ideal for diesel mechanics, refrigeration technicians, or heavy equipment mechanics looking to specialize in transport refrigeration systems.



Responsibilities



Inspection, maintenance, and repair of diesel and electric reefer units (containers, marine units) Inspection, maintenance, and repair of diesel heater containers and generators Electrical troubleshooting and repair including 3-phase AC, 12V DC, and low voltage control systems Diesel engine diagnosis and repair on refrigeration equipment Operating forklifts to mount/dismount clip-on generators on containers Installing and routing power cables on rail equipment Conducting site visits to record temperatures, fuel levels, and equipment status Equipment refueling and routine maintenance tasks Photo/video documentation of equipment conditions Communication with customers and team members via phone, internal chat, and two-way radio Other duties as required

Required Qualifications



Experience (REQUIRED):



Minimum 2 years documented hands-on experience with:

Transport refrigeration systems (reefer trailers, reefer containers, refrigerated rail cars, or marine reefers),

OR

Diesel engine repair combined with HVAC/refrigeration experience

Applicants without transport refrigeration or relevant diesel/HVAC experience will not be considered.



Technical Skills (REQUIRED):



Ability to diagnose and repair diesel engines Understanding of electrical systems and ability to troubleshoot electrical issues Comfortable reading wiring diagrams and technical manuals Experience using diagnostic tools and multimeters Mechanical aptitude with hand and power tools

Licenses & Certifications:



Valid Class 5 driver's license with clean driving record (REQUIRED) Forklift certification (preferred - we will train the right candidate) Ability to pass criminal record check (REQUIRED) Age 18 or older (required for Erailsafe certification)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:



This is an outdoor position year-round

- you'll work outside in Winnipeg winters and summers, in all weather conditions Enjoy working outdoors and staying active? This role keeps you moving and out of a cramped shop. Physical work including climbing, bending, and working in tight spaces Comfortable working at heights and around operating machinery

Preferred Qualifications



Experience specifically with transport refrigeration (reefer trailers, reefer containers) Electrical troubleshooting with 3-phase systems Experience in railway or other safety-critical industries Self-motivated with ability to work independently Effective problem-solving and time management skills Able to work overtime when required Availability for on-call rotation Availability for weekend shifts

About the Role



This position includes both shop work and field service at customer locations throughout Winnipeg.

This is NOT an entry-level position.

We are looking for experienced technicians who can hit the ground running with minimal supervision. If you do not have prior mechanical or refrigeration experience, please do not apply.
