A reefer and heater technician (transport refrigeration mechanic) is a specialized professional responsible for the
installation, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair
of the heating and cooling systems on refrigerated trucks, trailers, and shipping containers.
Responsibilities
Diagnosis and Troubleshooting:
Identify and determine the cause of malfunctions in refrigeration and heating systems using diagnostic tools, electronic test equipment, pressure gauges, and on-board computers. This involves a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration principles.
Repair and Overhaul:
Repair or replace defective components such as motors, compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, and control systems. This often requires using specialized equipment like welding and brazing tools to connect piping.
Preventive Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance and pre-trip inspections (PTIs) to prevent breakdowns and ensure equipment operates at peak performance and in compliance with safety standards.
Refrigerant Handling:
Test systems for leaks, recharge them with appropriate refrigerants, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding the conservation and recycling of these materials.
Safety and Compliance:
Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to all company safety protocols and health and safety standards.
Field Work:
May operate a mobile service truck to perform on-site repairs and maintenance, which can involve being on-call for emergency breakdowns in various weather conditions.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Technical Knowledge:
Strong background in mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and diesel engine systems is often required.
Problem-Solving:
The ability to logically identify and resolve complex technical problems is crucial.
Certifications:
Relevant certifications, such as those related to handling refrigerants (e.g., MOPIA certification), are often required.
Installation and Calibration:
Assemble, install, and integrate new refrigeration and heating units, interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, and other specifications to ensure proper installation and calibration of controls.
