At Community Care Durham (CCD), coordinated networks of volunteers and inter-professional staff, working out of integrated community hubs and other locations, strive to enrich the well-being and quality of life for people wherever they choose to call home. As the largest community support services agency in Durham Region, CCD collaborates with its partners and the broader community to address community issues and support local citizens to achieve their goals to live independently.
Reporting to the Supervisor, Adult Day Program, and supported by the Day Program Coordinator in day-to-day operations, the Recreationist is responsible for implementing Adult Day Program (ADP) services and actively contributing as a valued member of the team.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Planning, organizing, and leading recreational, therapeutic, and social activities tailored to clients' abilities, interests, and goals;
Supporting clients with activities of daily living (e.g., mobility assistance, transfers, and toileting);
Participates in team meetings to provide input and suggestions on changes to internal procedures/practices, review agency/policy updates, work towards ADP goals, and review client care needs;
Assisting with day-to-day meal service by supporting meal preparation, cooking, serving, and clean-up;
Maintaining a respectful, inclusive and person-centered approach to care;
Additional duties and projects as assigned, and promoting CCD services.
Qualifications required:
This position requires successful completion of a post-secondary education in recreation and leisure, therapeutic recreation, activation, gerontology, or equivalent.
Experience working with older adults and individuals with cognitive or physical impairments (e.g., dementia, stroke, Parkinsons's).
Current Emergency First Aid Certificate CPR C & AED required.
Demonstrated understanding of a holistic approach to recreation, incorporating the five domains of Therapeutic Recreation and the DementiAbility model.
Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.).
Ability to assist with one-person lifts and transfers of clients in and out of chairs or on and off the toilet seat. Clients can weigh on average 175 lbs.
Be able to squat, bend, push, pull and stand for long periods of time
Safe Food Handler's Certificate is an asset
Sensitivity to the needs of the vulnerable population with disabilities, including challenges in cognition
Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
Must work in a safe manner and promote the health and safety of all staff, volunteers, clients and the community as outlined within CCD policies
Compensation:
Starting at $23.00 per hour; with 6% vacation pay
