POSITION SUMMARY:

The Therapeutic Recreationists at Providence Healthcare provide services which utilize assessment, treatment, education, and recreation participation to enable persons with physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social limitations to acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge and behaviors that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally, function independently with the least amount of assistance and participate as fully as possible in society. The Therapeutic Recreationist will provide these services following the Standards of Practice for Therapeutic Recreation in Ontario (TRO). Therapeutic Recreation is directed toward functional intervention, leisure education and participation opportunities, which includes community integration. These processes support the goal of assisting the individual to maximize independence in leisure, optimal health and promote the highest possible quality of life.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Asses the physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social functioning of patients/clients as it relates to leisure through administration of formal and informal assessments;
  • Formulate individualized patient/client centered goals based on the analysis and assessment findings and that are consistent with team goals;
  • Identify measurable outcomes related to patient/client identified goals and the overall intervention plan, demonstrating patient/client progression toward their goals;
  • Develop and implement an individualized treatment plan based on the assessments and goals;
  • Ensure the intervention plan supports an interdisciplinary team approach to treatment;
  • Document and report treatment plans and progress with team members;
  • Reassess and monitor change and adjust therapy programs as appropriate;
  • Assess and determine appropriate adaptive leisure equipment as required;
  • Facilitate patient/client community leisure linkages;
  • Consult in pre-discharge plans and provide recommendations related to such;
  • Formulate plan regarding patient/resident/client discharge plans;
  • Write clear, concise and comprehensive program plans;
  • Adhere to the Standards of Practice of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO);
  • Educate and provide recommendations to promote an independent, healthy, enjoyable leisure lifestyle;
  • Organize and facilitate patient program on both facility wide and program specific basis;
  • Document initial assessment findings, ongoing assessments, progress notes and discharge arrangements in patients\xe2\x80\x99 health record in accordance with TRO Standards of Practice and Providence Healthcare policies and procedures;
  • Provide ongoing recommendations related to patient/client leisure functioning in interprofessional team meetings;
  • Participate in the planning, development and implementation of educational initiatives for patients, families, staff, volunteers, students and relevant community organizations;
  • Act as a preceptor to Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation students;
  • Supervise students and volunteers, assigned by the Professional Practice Leader or Patient Care Manager. Provide evaluations and recommendations;
  • Engage in clinical practice consultation with the Professional Practice Leader \xe2\x80\x93 Therapeutic Recreation when required;
  • Maintain, prepare and report Therapeutic Recreation workload statistical data according to MIS and MDS guidelines;
  • Responsible for the safety of patients during leisure activities both within the facility and while on outings in the community.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from a recognized University, or health-related undergraduate degree and Georgian post-graduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation;
  • Member of a recognized Therapeutic Recreation Association (i.e. Therapeutic Recreation Ontario, The American Therapeutic Recreation Association, The Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association);
  • CTRS or TRO Registered;
  • Two (2) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in Therapeutic Recreation practice in health care, preferably with the target population of the program(s) served;
  • Knowledge of Therapeutic Recreation assessment and therapeutic skills, interventions, various leisure activities, activity analysis, community integration resources and planning, individual and group facilitation techniques, protocol development, documentation, and volunteer utilization;
  • Knowledge of various Therapeutic Recreation assessment tools and techniques;
  • Knowledge of an individualized and systematic process to gather, analyze and interpret data;
  • Understanding of documentation and outcome measures;
  • Knowledge of Therapeutic Recreation program evaluation measures and outcome measures;
  • Knowledge of current Therapeutic Recreation models and Standards of Practice for provincial and national affiliations;
  • Knowledge of current Therapeutic Recreation literature, resources, standards, trends and research;
  • Possess understanding of the needs of adult and geriatric populations, including but not limited to disease and disability related to setting;
  • Understanding of the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual impacts of Therapeutic Recreation and how they relate to overall health;
  • Knowledge of relevant adaptive leisure equipment for adults with disabilities;
  • Ability and experience required to work cooperatively and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team setting;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Knowledge and experience in research development and applications;
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills;
  • Demonstration of on-going professional development activities;
  • Ability to select, administer, implement, score, analyze and interpret standardized and non-standardized assessments;
  • Ability to select goal-directed and outcome-oriented interventions aimed at maintenance and/or enhancement of individual leisure status and functional level;
  • Ability to write comprehensive program protocols;
  • Ability to convey program protocols, goals and objectives, and criteria to patients/clients and interdisciplinary team members;
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments;
  • Ability to maintain Therapeutic Recreation documentation;
  • Ability to evaluate individual/group process and apply modifications as necessary;
  • Very good attendance record;
  • Good performance record.
