The Recreation Therapist is a part of the interdisciplinary team that responds to the needs of residents and their families throughout their time within the home. This position will work in accordance with all policies and procedures of the home, and follow the regulations outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Recreation Therapist is required to perform their duties in a manner that is consistent with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
Key Accountabilities:
Interacting with residents of the home to determine interests, abilities, and function and implement appropriate programming
Provides and modifies social visits and activities in accordance with residents' mental and physical status
Document recreation therapy care plan in resident's InfoAnywhere care plan and document case notes following interactions with a resident
Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team to plan, implement, and evaluate individual rec therapy plans of care for residents
Attending morning team gathering on in-house days to get or provide updates on residents and consult/collaborate with frontline nursing staff and spiritual care practitioner
Participates in and facilitates legacy work with residents or their identified family members in collaboration with the frontline staff
Facilitate final wish opportunities in collaboration with frontline staff as appropriate and feasible
Provides guidance and opportunities for family interactions
Develops and implement programming for community members consistent with LTC goals for community engagement
Maintains monthly statistics for resident visits, activities, family engagement and reports to identified manager
Participates as a member of LTC committees as required.
Assists with the coordination of students, community agencies, entertainment, complementary therapies, and volunteer positions.
Qualifications:
Graduation from a degree or diploma program in Recreation and Leisure Leadership from a recognized College or University
Experience in providing end of life care or experience with grief and bereavement either in LTC
Minimum of 2 years experience working in long-term care
Strong relationship-building skills

Effective in fast-paced, dynamic environments

Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities
Professionalism, tact, and diplomacy in all interactions
Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, as required
