Main Purpose & Function The Recreation Programmer I \xe2\x80\x93 2STGD Inclusion is responsible for assisting a supervisor in the development, coordination, implementation, and direct leadership or instruction of specified community recreation programs and events for the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. The Recreation Programmer I is a citywide position that works across departments and facilities to support the creation and expansion of programs that meet the needs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities with an emphasis on the Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse communities. They actively use their lived experience and expertise to reduce barriers to participation.
In addition, the Recreation Programmer I will support the development and provision of training to staff on equity with an emphasis on 2STGD inclusion.
This position is currently based out of the Park Board head office at 2099 Beach Ave, and will work a Sunday \xe2\x80\x93Thursday work week, with hours of work in accordance with the collective agreement.
Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships The position reports to the Recreation Programmer II \xe2\x80\x93 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusion, and plans, assigns, and supervises the work of one or more Program Assistant I, II or III. The work is reviewed by superiors, the Park Board and the public in terms of attainment of desired results and services rendered.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists a superior in identifying and reporting on community recreation needs, with a specific focus on programs that support participation for Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Diverse people, their families, and networks
  • Makes recommendations on the development, implementation and discontinuation of recreation programs and events.
  • Assumes responsibility for coordinating and directing routine recreational programs in one or more of the following areas: amateur sports and physical fitness, arts and crafts, aquatics programs, ice surface programs, social and cultural events, or persons with disabilities and senior citizen activities that promote participation and inclusion of Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Diverse people, their families and networks
  • Provides information regarding the community recreation program to interested groups and individuals through a variety of channels including in person, phone, email, and social media.
  • Personally leads or instructs the public in various recreation activities, including existing and new programs (e.g. 2STGD Swim (Templeton Pool), 2STGD Workout Drop-In (Creekside)
  • Participates in recruiting, instructing and directing group leaders, part-time staff and volunteers; and oversees the work of other full-time and part-time staff involved in approved recreation programs.
  • In consultation with a superior, supports the development and leadership of staff training on equity, with an emphasis on 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion.
  • In consultation with a superior, arranges for and schedules space within the assigned facilities or area.
  • Monitors programs, keeps statistical records and prepares narrative evaluation of programs.
  • Maintains a variety of routine operating and administrative records and assists in overseeing collection of and accounting for admissions and fees.
  • Initiates requisitions for materials and equipment for the approval of a superior and makes recommendations for the disposal of unsafe, worn or obsolete equipment.
  • Prepares publicity material for the promotion of special programs and events.
  • Enforces rules and regulations and deals consistently and tactfully with groups or individuals who fail to observe these.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education and Experience:
  • Completion of post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation or related discipline plus some related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • This position is limited to candidates who are Two-Spirit, trans, and gender diverse and/or non-binary. 2STGD people with an equivalent combination of training and lived experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of the needs and interests of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities with an emphasis on the Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse residents of the City of Vancouver
  • Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of a planned community recreation program
  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and practices involved in conducting community recreation programs
  • Some knowledge of the procedures and programming requirements in at least one and preferably more of the following areas: amateur sports, physical fitness, arts and crafts, aquatics, ice surface, social and cultural, or persons with disabilities and senior citizen programs.
  • Some knowledge of the polices of the Board of Parks and Recreation as applied to community recreation
  • Some knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and recreational instruction
  • Ability to recruit instruct, assign, and review the work of recreational personnel as it relates to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and especially Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse people
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public, maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and consistency.
  • Ability to maintain statistical, financial, and clerical records and write reports
  • Skill in the use of recreational equipment and the performance of various recreational activities.
  • Ability to organize, promote and direct others in a variety of group recreational activities.
  • Ability to instruct and participate in a variety of sports, social, educational and cultural activities, and/or arts and handicrafts.

Transportation and Records Checks:
  • Local area travel is a requirement of this position must have the ability to meet transportation needs..
  • A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
