This position works in the North West Community - Programs organizational unit. This is recreation leadership work implementing a variety of recreational activities at various locations in northwest Burnaby, including schools, parks and wading pools, with a focus on children, preschool and family programs. Provides leadership to auxiliary staff, contract instructors and volunteers involved in programs. Duties are performed within established program guidelines, but some independent action and initiative is exercised. Prepares and supports program plans and promotes interest and participation in program activities, or events, and establishes and maintains close liaison with schools, community groups and the general public. Prepares and maintains records, activity reports and equipment and supply inventories. Enforces rules and regulations and ensures that required standards of behaviour and safety are maintained. Assumes responsibility for the operation and security of recreation spaces on assigned shifts and/or in absence of a supervisor. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of two-year Community Recreation program from a recognized Community College and some related experience, or completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses in recreation and sound related community recreation experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Working knowledge of organized community recreation principles and practices (i.e., preschool and children's programs). Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contract instructors, volunteers, groups, associations, and the general public. Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports and promotional material related to the work. Ability to participate in the recruitment of and give guidance and instruction to auxiliary and contract instructors and to recruit, train, direct and evaluate volunteers. Knowledge of community-based recreation with a focus on preschool and children programming is considered an asset. A Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia, First Aid Certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate - Level C are required.
