Up to six (6) positions available
Reporting to the Manager, Recreation Operations and under the supervision of the Supervisor, Custodial Maintenance, this position is responsible for carrying out custodial and building maintenance tasks ensuring that the recreation facilities are maintained at established levels of cleanliness and operation.
The work is routine, repetitive, physically demanding, and is subject to quality check by a supervisor. Hours of work vary and includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Duties Include:
Performs custodial duties, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, waxing and stripping of floors, cleaning and disinfecting sinks, toilets and urinals, cleaning mirrors, fixtures, showers, furniture, cubicles, windows and metal ducting, dusting ledges and ventilation systems, ground maintenance, maintaining exterior spaces, transferring garbage and recycling, and replenishing bathroom supplies for the City of Vernon's recreation facilities
Carries out minor building maintenance including changing lightbulbs and faucet washers, and oil locks, window hinges, painting, ensuring bathrooms amenities are in working order, and all other items within the facility as required.
Prepares building for daily use by positioning furniture, and opening and/or closing doors as required to maintain area and building security at all times.
Keep staff room and janitorial rooms in an organized, clean and safe manner.
Receives and replenishes janitorial supplies delivered to the buildings.
Operates and maintain automatic floor cleaners
Responsible for the set up and take down of events which includes but is not limited to, tables, chairs, portable stages and partitions, and moving office furniture.
Ensures user compliance with rental agreements and the safe use of the facilities.
Identifies and rectifies unsafe, or potentially unsafe, conditions. Report to Supervisor as required.
Answer inquiries and gives out routine information and assistance to the public when required.
Ensures buildings are safely secured upon completion of daily shift and regularly patrolling the facility to prevent theft and vandalism and maintaining order in behaviour of users.
Work with minimal supervision.
Performs other duties as required.
All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.
Required Education and Experience:
Completion of a Building Service Worker Level 1 course;
Class 5 B.C Drivers' License.
A combination of related education and experience may be considered.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of standard methods, materials and equipment used in janitorial care and maintenance of facilities.
Proficient in the safe and efficient use of light equipment such as auto scrubber, rotary buffer-polisher, snow blower, power tools, and leaf blower.
Ability to perform manual work and sustain physical demands of job in a timely manner
Ability to take initiative, work independently, and demonstrate sound judgement with minimal supervision
Ability to understand and effectively carries out oral and written instructions
Demonstrated essential organizational and time management skills to complete tasks effectively under pressure
Good communication skills (oral & written) combined with the ability to be courteous, tactful, and respectful when dealing with employees, contractors, and members of the general public.
Safety conscious with a demonstrated knowledge of applicable WorkSafe BC legislation, Technical Safety BC, and the City of Vernon Occupational Health & Safety policy.
Ability to obtain Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate
Ability to obtain Pool Operator Level 1 Certificate
Ability to obtain and maintain an acceptable Police Information Check with the Vulnerable Sector Check
Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Previous experience in custodial work, operation, and maintenance of facilities
Experience with efficiently operating light equipment including, but not limited to a wet dry vacuum, floor scrubber, snow blower, leaf blower and ride on tractor
Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate
Pool Operator Level 1 Certificate
Previous experience in event conversions and operations
