For everyone there are key people, activities and events which engage them in life and give meaning to their day. It is the responsibility of all the staff to get to know what those are for our Residents and to assist in connecting or reconnecting them to those persons or activities which are important to them. Everyone working at WestPark Lodge is expected to contribute to the engagement and joy of Residents, but the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation staff, as well as Key Workers assigned to Residents, have a special obligation to promote this.
Resident Care Strategy
Choices in Community Living believes that Resident care is centered around our Residents' individual experience. With the mission of providing excellent care in comfortable, joyful environments, our Resident Care Strategy directs staff by focusing on six important tenets: Welcome (and other defining moments), Personalization, Living our Values, Accountability, Sharing/Communicating/Updating, and focus on the TEAM. It is the responsibility of the Recreation Coordinator to ensure that the Resident Care Strategy is evident in our processes and staff knowledge, and is as successful as measured by our Residents' happiness.
Recreation Program Planning
Recreation planning is the heart of what makes life at WestPark great. The Recreation Co Ordinator will:
Assist in the Resident Orientation process
Determining individual and overall interests of Residents
Developing and maintaining Resident profiles to ensure they are accurate
Develop life enrichment activities and events that meet mental, emotional, cultural, physical, social, spiritual and sensory needs of Residents
Assist in promoting activities where Residents can be involved in daily activities of the Lodge
Direct other recreation staff in recreation programming
Familiarize self with community resources which can be used for recreation programs - e.g. local musicians, school groups
Engage family participation in recreation programs
Liaise with AHS staff - RNs, OTs, PTs, RTs - for input and support of recreation programs
Encourage and support Resident social clubs/associations,
Host Resident council meeting
Evaluate activities and events so they continue to be based on Resident interest and participation
Developing monthly Recreation Calendar
Developing monthly Newsletter.
Recreation Program Implementation
The Recreation Coordinator is responsible to deliver recreation programs and assist other staff in doing the same.
Create monthly recreation calendar and newsletter, assist in distributing monthly Recreation Calendar and Newsletter before the first day of the month
Ensure monthly Calendar and Newsletter information is communicated to Residents in a manner that is understood by them
Provide resources and instruction for staff to initiate spontaneous and planned programming for Residents daily
Provide information to Residents/Resident Advocates pertaining to recreational activities offered within the community
Ensure Residents are personally invited to participate in programs
Lead activities as required
Monitor and document activity and event participation
Encourage and support both autonomy and group interaction.
Volunteer Recruitment and Supervision
The Recreation Coordinator will promote the understanding of the importance of volunteers to paid staff, and the need to support volunteers who will be considered as part of the Recreation Service staff.
Determining volunteer needs at WestPark Lodge
Creating volunteer positions where volunteer skills and interests match Volunteer Service requirements
Participate in interview and selection process of volunteers as required
Monitor volunteer orientation, and participate as required
Organize educational and training opportunities for volunteers
Organize daily tasks for volunteers.
Quality Assurance
Ensure Best Practices are evident with the delivery of services to Residents
Ensure compliance to organizational, departmental, and positional policies and procedures
Ensure government regulations and standards are adhered to - Supportive Living Accommodation Standards, Alberta Health Continuing Care Standards, Public Health Standards
Assist in gathering, analyzing, and responding to Resident and family/advocate feedback
Ensure feedback is used to enhance Recreation Service to Residents
Ensure Residents are provided with social and leisure opportunities that enhance their well-being and social needs and that they express satisfaction with the Recreation Service
Ensure information is managed in a manner that protects the privacy and personal information of Residents.
Inventory Management
Monitor Recreation Service equipment and supplies, and ensure adequate supplies are available for required activities/events
Ensure supplies are found in designated locations.
Information Management
Develop and maintain Resident recreational interest profiles
Ensure documentation accurately reflects changes in Resident needs and that Resident recreational profiles are updated and accurate.
Develop and maintain Resident recreational records
Safe Work Procedures
It is important that personnel adhere to safe work procedures while performing their duties. To support this outcome the Recreation Coordinator must:
Familiarize self with Operational Policies and Procedures, Licensing Standards, and Continuing Care Standards e.g. responding to Residents' opinions and comments regarding social or leisure activities
Familiarize self with Emergency Response Plans and their implementation
Familiarize self with chemical usage, equipment usage, housekeeping and laundry processes
Enter any Recreation Service issues into Recreation Service Logbook
Understand the consequences of unsafe work conditions - e.g. clutter and wet floors can lead to injuries
Ensure that outbreaks of illness are minimized.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Previous experience working with Seniors and Recreation Services
Degree/ Diploma in Recreation Coordination, Recreation Therapy Degree or Diploma or equivalent may be considered
Management related experience
