Position Summary
Evoke offers an intensive, research-informed Reading Remediation program to students from Grade 1 through postsecondary, grounded in the science of reading. This high-dosage intervention is delivered one-to-one, virtually, via 30-minute tutoring sessions five days a week.
Evoke works with a diverse range of students, including those with learning disabilities, ADHD, ASD, and/or giftedness. The reading intervention specialist delivers evidence-aligned instruction and supports students in developing foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, orthography, fluency, syntax, spelling, vocabulary, morphology, and comprehension. Specialists foster a positive, encouraging learning environment that builds confidence and motivation.
Successful candidates must complete a thorough background check (including vulnerable sector screening) and a reading skills assessment. All specialists participate in an initial paid training session before beginning work.
This is a
one-year
contractual temporary employment position with the opportunity for an extension
. Consistent, ongoing support is necessary for our students. Only candidates who can commit to a full year will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver interactive, engaging, evidence-aligned, explicit, targeted, and systematic virtual one-to-one reading instruction to neurodiverse students, using Evoke's research-informed remediation program curriculum, lesson plans, and resources.
Help improve literacy outcomes for struggling readers.
Follow individualized student intervention plans under the supervision of a team lead.
Screen, monitor, and assess student progress using Evoke's assessment tools.
Working under the direction of a team lead adjust instruction as needed.
Provide immediate, constructive feedback to students.
Scaffold learning by breaking tasks into manageable steps, offering repeated practice, and gradually releasing support to foster independence.
Help students analyze mistakes to identify patterns, misunderstandings, or skill gaps.
Build student motivation and engagement.
Adapt instructional methods to meet diverse learning needs, including dyslexia, ADHD, processing speed, rapid automatized naming (RAN) and working memory deficits.
Record student progress in monthly progress reports and weekly session notes via Evoke's client management tool (Jane App).
Meet monthly with Evoke's Reading Remediation team lead to review student progress and SMART goals.
Work in partnership and communicate regularly with the Reading Remediation team lead to support student progress.
Contribute to a positive, supportive, and inclusive work culture.
Required Knowledge, Qualifications, and Experience
No prior clinical experience is required; training, curriculum, lesson plans, and resources are provided.
Understanding of:
Language structure (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics)
Language acquisition and development (typical and atypical)
Literacy and the reading process (cognitive models of reading)
Undergraduate degree in applied linguistics, linguistics and disclosure studies, communication sciences and disorders, psycholinguistics and communication differences, or a related discipline; postgraduate degree in communicative disorders is preferred.
Proficiency with technology, including productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), presentation software (Google Slides), Web applications (Google Docs, Google Drive), web applications (Google Docs, Drive, Slides), and teleconference platforms (Zoom, Google Hangouts)
Comfortable using online tools (interactive whiteboards, digital letter tiles) to deliver programming
Skills, Attributes and Competencies

Experience and comfort with virtual work
Interest in working with neurodiverse learners

Work Environment and Technology Requirements
Fully virtual tutoring role
Employees are required to provide and maintain their own computer, reliable high-speed internet connection, and any necessary peripherals (webcam, headset, microphone) needed to perform their duties effectively.
Employees are expected to ensure their equipment meets Evoke's minimum technical standards to support secure, uninterrupted service delivery.
Evoke will provide either:
A monthly stipend to help offset the cost of the employee's internet and teleconferencing platform at no cost to the employee
Access to Evoke's teleconferencing platform at no cost to the employee
Shifts
Morning: 7:15 -8:20 am
Afternoon: 3:30-5:10 pm
Evening: 5:15-7:50 pm
Occasional weekend shifts
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods
Clear verbal communication via webcam and microphone
Comfortable using online platforms and digital tools for tutoring
Confidentiality and Discretion
Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information
Use discretion in communications with students, families, and colleagues
Follow organizational policies and legal requirements regarding privacy and data protection
Refrain from sharing any identifying student information outside approved channels
