Job Description

George Gordon First Nation (GGFN) is focused on self-sustainability, economic growth, andutilization of our lands and resources. GGFN Ranch is currently establishing its operations as a 300 head cow/calf operation location near Punnichy, Saskatchewan utilizing hay and pasture land on George Gordon First Nation. GGFN is seeking a full-time, day to day Ranch Manager to oversee and operate the cow/calf operation with a set up and establishment, focus on herd health, quality genetics and building a profitable ranch over the long term.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The GGFN Ranch Manager is directly responsible for the daily operation of the farm and will report directly to the Farm Director. The Ranch Manager and Farm Director will jointly create a yearly work plan for the ranch, which the Manager will be responsible to execute in a timely fashion through out the year. The GGFN Ranch Manager is directly responsible for the livestock operation by ensuring that proper techniques are utilized in the care of stock and equipment. Be responsible for coordinating all activities related to the daily operation of the GGFN Ranch. Undertake a mentorship role for one or two GGFN members to help incorporate them into the operation.

1. Winter:

? Feed cattle daily, check watering systems

? Administer scheduled vaccination protocols

? Coordinate transportation and sale of market ready and cull animals

? Daily management of calving

o Administer animal ID at birth

o Maintain animal ID logs and history, live births, deaths, etc.

? Equipment Maintenance as required

2. Spring/Summer:

? Coordinate branding and calf vaccinations

? Pasture planning and rotation management throughout the summer

? Ongoing fence maintenance on existing pastures

? Regular checks on herd while in pasture

? Pasture treating as required

? Breeding management, bull selection, and exposure date planning

? Cutting and baling 2000+ bales, equipment provided by GGFN

? Seasonal equipment maintenance required

? Maintain fence lines

? Coordination and planning of spring seeding inputs for grain grown as feed stock

Skills and Qualifications:

? Possess considerable knowledge of effective pasture procedures, techniques, and stock management

? Must have at least five (5) years of practical experience and technical training in livestock management and grazing techniques

? Coordinate grazing operations in a timely and efficient manner

? Possess the ability to maintain electronic daily activity sheets, log books and animal record logs

? Possess ability to manage herd health and administer industry standard health protocols and vaccination plans

? Experience maintaining and operating farm equipment, so mechanical skills are required

? Have effective communication skills to report to the Farm Director, as well as mentor and train George Gordon members in the daily operational practices of the farm

? Must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and possess excellent time

management skills

? Possess the ability to take direction and work with minimum supervision

? Be willing to work flexible hours and be on call in case of emergencies

? Be well organized, punctual, dependable, reliable and ensure that all confidential matters remain confidential

? Possess a valid Saskatchewan class five (5) driver's license and additional consideration given to individuals with a 1A license

? Other duties as requested

Work Conditions:

In the winter months, hours of work are expected to be as required to everyday to feed and oversee the herd. Spring calving in March/April will require significant oversight and hands on management. The summer months will be hours as required to build and maintain fence, put up hay, and haul it. This employment will be full-time year around, but no specific hours of work are stated. The Ranch Manager must put in sufficient time to ensure all aspects of the operational plan are implemented.

The successful candidate should live in close proximity to the ranch.
