We are a division of the Nova Scotia Department of ; Nova Scotia's lead agency for emergency planning, response, and recovery, working closely with municipalities to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.Shubenacadie Radio Communications Centre provides 7-24-365 dispatch, call notification, critical activity monitoring, emergency notifications, answering services, secure alarming, and remote infrastructure management (telecommunications tower sites) to support many first response services such as EMO, volunteer Fire Services, Conservation Enforcement, and others.About Our OpportunityAs the Dispatch Operator 1 (Radio Operator), you are responsible for the provision of dispatch, call notification, call answering, database queries, activity monitoring and alarming services for a variety of federal, provincial, and municipal government departments and agencies.This Hiring Pool will be used to fill various Permanent, Part-time, Term, Temporary, and Relief opportunities over the next several months.Qualifications and ExperienceYou have at least five (5) years related experience in dispatch/ radio operations. You take pride in high-quality service delivery. You must have high attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, superior oral and written communication skills, and must detail in your submission your client service experience (i.e., in a public customer service environment, or providing support to internal clients).As the ideal candidate you will also have the following skills and work experience:

  • Trained and understanding of emergency and/ or disaster settings, as well as the use of multiple specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for individual agencies. For example, the SOPs covering the transport of prisoners to and from court and correctional institutions by the Nova Scotia Justice Sheriff Service.
  • Knowledge of computer software programs, such as the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as internet-based programs.
  • Strong team player, resourceful, reliable
  • Ability to use good judgment, take initiative, and maintain several tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to stay calm during times of crisis and determine priorities with minimal supervision, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Typing skills are an asset.

  • Operators are required to work shift work with minimal supervision. If successful, you must be available to work varying 12-hour shifts during daytime, evening and overnight shifts, including weekends and holidays. Scheduling and time off are granted based on length of service.
  • The facility is a 24-hour operation and is a tobacco free environment.
  • Successful candidates will complete a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum 8 weeks on-site training program during which time continuous evaluation will determine continuation in the position.
Additional InformationThis Hiring Pool will be used to fill various Permanent, Part-time, Term, Temporary, and Relief opportunities over the next several months.A relief employee is an employee who is not regularly scheduled by the Employer, but who works relief assignments on an as-needed basis as operational requirements demand. As such, a relief employee does not have guaranteed hours of work.
