The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent full-time Public Health Educator with the Public Health Unit.

Note: Preference will be given to CUPE 12.3 members.

Job description

The Public Health Educator plans, develops, implements and evaluates health promotion initiatives/programs in order to effectively meet the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS). Applies evidence-informed decision-making and a population level perspective to identify, analyze and address health issues within Chatham-Kent.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent\'s core values and competencies
  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates comprehensive health promotion programs using a variety of strategies including 1) building healthy public policy, 2) creating supportive environments, 3) strengthening community action, 4) developing personal skills, 5) reorienting health services
  • Implement program evaluation
  • Obtain, assess, and analyze current evidence-based research, literature, and other developments in public health issues
  • Use appropriate strategies and techniques to manage conflict
  • Make evidence-informed decisions and recommendations for policy and program development
  • Use health promotion theories and evidence-informed practices, develops educational and health promotion materials for use in broad-based community campaigns as well as with targeted populations
  • Develop and sustain community partnerships with stakeholders, and also liaise with internal and external partners, agencies and organizations
  • Utilize strategies to build and strengthen community partnership and ownership and improve capacity for action around shared health priorities
  • Write creative marketing or educational material designed to influence people\'s health behaviour as appropriate to the audience
  • Apply knowledge and evidence in health promotion to design and develop programs
  • Suggest amendments to improve the effectiveness of programs and policies
  • Advocate for public health and other applicable policies and services that promote and protect the health and well-being of individuals and communities
  • Increase knowledge, raises awareness and influences public opinion on health issues of public health importance
  • Support a work environment that values diversity
  • Adhere to principles, standards, professional/personal boundaries and codes of conduct established by organizational policies
  • Ability to work with community partners and facilitate health related discussions
  • Participate in the development of operational plans, objectives and workplans and document activities
Essential qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited university (in a Health Sciences, Health Promotion, or Health Education program), including course work on community development, social marketing strategies, and health promotion; or an equivalent of related education and experience
  • Minimum 2 years related experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards
  • Knowledge and skills in the following areas:
  • Community mobilization
  • Health promotion, healthy public policy development
  • Mass media communications, including social media
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workloads
  • Excellent written and verbal (including public speaking) communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet (or other similar software programs)
Other qualifications
  • Master\'s degree is an asset
  • Previous work experience in a Public Health setting would be an asset
  • Knowledge of continious quality improvement principles and/or experience participating in CQI projects is an asset
  • The ability to communicate both written and oral French language is an asset
Work environment/hours of work
  • This position works mostly indoors
  • This position works weekdays with occasional evening and weekend hours
COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver\'s licence/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver\'s license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.

Background check requirements

Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment; you must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check

Essential physical and/or safety requirements
  • Mask Fit testing (N95)
  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface (less than 4.55 kgs or 10 lbs) (mostly in office and to/from vehicle)
  • Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair (may require sustained periods of sedentary time sitting at office desk, meeting rooms, vehicle)
  • Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement), mousing (mostly typing, mousing, or writing)
