WDG Public Health is a hybrid work environment. Certain employee groups may be permitted to work remotely based on the nature of the position and program. A minimum expectation of onsite presence is required, which will be dependent on operational needs.
The Public Health Inspector implements the programs of the Health Protection division, protecting individual and community health through health promotion and enforcement of Provincial Acts, Legislation, and By-Laws. They carry out public health inspection activities required by the Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines under the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA). This includes identifying public health hazards, overseeing corrective action, and enforcing the HPPA and its regulations. Inspectors also provide consultative and educational services on various topics that affect public health.
Areas of Responsibility:
Inspecting and monitoring food premises, planning reviews of proposed food premises, assisting with food recalls where requested, food sampling and analysis, and food complaint investigations.
Inspecting public pools and spas and monitoring and posting public notice at bathing beaches.
Serving as the Safe Drinking Water Subject Matter expert for the Fergus office, assisting with the continuous improvement and updating of related policies and resources, providing support and guidance to other agency Public Health Inspectors with 319 and 170 systems.
Acting as Fergus-area liaison with Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks (MECP) in matters related to 170 systems and participating in the Environmental Health Team Safe Water working group.
Enforcing Small Drinking Water Regulation, assessing and advising operators on follow-up/corrective action for adverse water quality incidents, issuing boil water and drinking water advisories.
Investigating tenant complaints for recluse, mold, pests, and environmental health concerns such as groundwater contamination, air quality, liaising with MECP, and responding to garbage and standing water complaints.
Administering the duties of the rabies control programs, including the investigation of potential human exposure to rabies from animal contact, testing and enforcement of mandatory immunization regulation, dispensing vaccine to physicians as needed.
Carrying out communicable disease investigations where suspected food borne illness occurs and conducting communicable disease surveillance, management, education, and control.
Conducting infection control audits of institutions, personal service setting inspections and provincial licensing inspections for retirement, group, and funeral homes.
Participating in On Call rotation.
Hours of Work:
Regular office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Evening and weekend work may be required
Support on-call after hours, weekends and stat holidays (approximately 4-5 times per year)

Requirements:
4 Year BASc. in Environmental Health.
Mandatory Certification in Public Health Inspection (Canada).
A minimum of 5 years general inspection experience.
A minimum 5 years practical experience working with Ontario Regulation 319/08 (Small Drinking Water Systems) and Ontario Regulation 170/03 (Drinking Water Systems).
Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Ability to clearly document information, prepare reports.
Excellent computer skills, thorough knowledge of data base programs.
Familiarity with the Hedgehog and iPHIS information systems.
Ability to work in a flexible and cooperative manner with clients, the public and colleagues.
Thorough knowledge of all legislation and standards relating to Environmental and Public Health.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple, competing demands in a professional manner.
Valid driver's license and use of vehicle.
