Job Description

Under supervision of the Public Education Coordinator, the Public Education Intern will be responsible for the delivery of Fire Prevention and Public Education programming for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service at various community events and locations throughout the City of Winnipeg. Anticipated employment is from April 28, 2025 to August 15, 2025 (16 weeks in total, one position could start approximately 1 week earlier to commence scheduling of events.


As the •Public Education Intern, •you will:


• Deliver the current Fire Safety House Program that includes specific education programming as per the established lesson plans.


• Drive the tow vehicle and safety house trailer to specific community events.


• Utilize Public Education tools including "Sparky" the mascot at community events, as per established procedures and guidelines.


• Assist Public Education Officers in the delivery of other programs such as fire extinguisher training, lectures and other programs as requested.


• Assist with information booths including the distribution of appropriate educational materials at community events.


• Maintain a work schedule for the Fire Safety House trailer staff by coordinating a list of events, activity requests, pre-activity requirements, and time allotments.


• Document events and other activities for statistics.


• Prepare written reports on events and other activities for data entry.


• Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as required.
Your education and qualifications include:


• Currently enrolled in a post-secondary education program (diploma or degree) or a recent graduate of a post-secondary program is an asset.


• Experience working with the public or in a customer service environment.


• Experience delivering presentations or programming to the public is preferred.


• Experience and comfort working with children is an asset.


• Knowledge of community groups and organizations.


• Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively deliver information to the public in small and large group settings.


• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Ability to provide a high level of service that respects the diversity of the public and the workplace.


• Ability to exercise sound judgement when interacting with the public.


• Ability to work independently; initiating and completing work under minimal direction and supervision.


• Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast paced, dynamic environment.


• Fluency in both official languages (French and English) or a second language is preferred.

• The successful applicant must possess and maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada.


• Must possess and maintain a valid Police Information Check and Police Vulnerable Sector Check (original copy) from the City of Winnipeg Police Service (RCMP or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer. • Must possess and maintain a valid Adult Abuse Registry Check (original copy) from the Government of Manitoba Adult Abuse Registry Unit (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer. • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Full Driver's License (Class 4 would be an asset) (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer. Documentation must not have any alcohol related charges and/or convictions. Provincial equivalents will be accepted, however, out of province applicants must show proof of having transferred their license to Manitoba prior to their first day of recruit training. • Valid Driver Safety Rating Scale Statement (original copy) from Manitoba Public Insurance (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer which must be dated no more than thirty (30) days prior to the start date of employment. Documentation must be no more than minus four (-4) on the Driver Safety Rating scale. This document will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense. • The successful candidate must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position - including considerable standing, stooping, use of both hands, walking, bending, reaching, crawling, pulling, crouching, lifting, twisting, medium lifting of up to 50lbs.
• Willingness and ability to work in adverse or inclement weather conditions.


• Willingness and ability to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays. Days of work and daily hours of work will vary and will average 40 hours per week.


• Willingness and ability to work the full term of the employment contract (16 weeks in total).
