Calgary Housing Company (CHC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the City of Calgary. We are transforming to support resident success, modernize our business, and contribute to creating diverse, inclusive communities. As a Public Affairs Strategist with CHC, you will be responsible for initiating, developing and coordinating company government relations responses, advocacy positions and communications on a wide variety of public policy issues. Primary duties include:

  • Lead cross-corporate teams of subject matter experts (SME\xe2\x80\x99s) and guide work to develop official positions and responses for actions and decisions that impact Calgary Housing Company.
  • Work with municipal, provincial and federal governments and support the engagement of elected officials and senior bureaucracy to increase the awareness of CHC\xe2\x80\x99s priority issues.
  • Provide assistance and guidance for the creation and implementation of long-term advocacy and engagement plans.
  • Write reports and briefing notes based on approved advocacy priorities and contribute to the development and refresh of advocacy messages.
  • Research and write materials on CHC\xe2\x80\x99s positions and initiatives with senior governments, other Affordable Housing organizations and industry associations.
  • Help guide the development and implementation of the Company\xe2\x80\x99s government relations program, identify policy areas and priorities and potential advocacy strategies that CHC may advance.
  • Develop responsive policy positions and advocacy strategies, prepare appropriate communications for submission to various levels of government
  • Coordinate engagement with elected officials and senior departmental officials at all levels of government, and for relevant industry associations and external partner groups.






Qualifications
  • A degree in Public Administration, Political Science or other area related to public policy and at least 5 years of related experience working in the public sector and/or with the development of public policy.
  • Membership with the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS), Public Affairs Association of Canada (PAAC), International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or other public policy and communications-based organizations will be considered an asset.
  • A solid understanding of the relationship between City Council and the Administration, and their respective roles in public policy.
  • Knowledge of intergovernmental trends, municipal government operations and structures and the general workings of the provincial and federal governments.
  • The ability to communicate highly political and/or sensitive and confidential information to leaders and all levels of government.
  • Proven ability to work within project teams and establish effective relationships with diverse partners.

Compensation: Pay Grade 11 $42.09 - 56.27 per hour

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day
work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.


Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
