BCIT\xe2\x80\x99s School of Health Sciences is hiring for a part-time studies (PTS) Laboratory Assistant, Biotechnology position (105 hours, May 1st \xe2\x80\x93 May 19th). The successful candidate will provide technical support in the laboratory to the instructor for an Animal Cell Culture microcredential (XBIO 4010 and XBIO 4020). Candidates must have experience with culturing, maintaining and manipulating animal cells following pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry standards. They must be able to follow typical protocols for animal cell culture and work efficiently within a biosafety cabinet under the direction of the instructor.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES:
The animal cell culture microcredential is a 2-week long, intensive laboratory training course with 45 hours of hands-on (in person) training of 10 trainees over 10 in-person lab days. The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Growing animal cell lines and preparing cell culture media and other laboratory reagents prior to the start of the microcredential (May 1st \xe2\x80\x93 May 5th) under the guidance of the instructor.
Daily preparation of any required cell lines and laboratory reagents for the duration of the microcredential (May 8th \xe2\x80\x93 May 19th).
Continued maintenance of animal cell lines over the 3-week period.
Continuously observing, assisting and providing feedback to trainees while they perform animal cell culture and other laboratory techniques.
Participating in evaluating trainee competency in animal cell culture during a final practical exam.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
A B.Sc. degree, Associate degree, or Diploma in a life sciences field such as Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry.
Minimum of 2 total years of experience in animal cell culture using good aseptic technique acquired from recent work in the biotechnology industry or an academic research lab or from recent intensive training in animal cell culture in an undergraduate program.
Ability to work efficiently and aseptically in a biosafety cabinet following animal cell culture protocols.
Ability to make basic laboratory math calculations and perform other routine life sciences laboratory tasks such as aliquoting reagents.
Strong organizational and time-management skills in the laboratory, and ability to closely follow written and oral instructions.

Salary Range $51.47 per contact hour.
Additional Salary Information Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
