Position Description

Responsibilities




I. Screening and prioritizing of psychological referrals

Consults and collaborates with school personnel and/or parents (e.g., school resource group meetings, team meetings, pod meetings). Conducts direct classroom observation of students. Gathers pertinent information from other disciplines. Identifies needs of children and/or school communities.

II. Assessment

Conducts assessments using structured and unstructured (e.g., observations, interviews, file reviews) psycho-diagnostic techniques and instruments. Assesses cognitive functioning, academic achievement, learning styles, social/emotional functioning, personality, self-esteem and adaptive behaviour. Interprets results of assessments to school personnel and parents. Prepares written assessment reports for the Student Record and for relevant community professionals on request.

III. Diagnosis

Contributes to the information base necessary for programming to meet student needs. Provides formal diagnostic opinions as mandated by Alberta Education for the purpose of identifying students eligible for severe disability funding. Integrates multidisciplinary information into viable student modification plans. Prepares written summaries and other documentation as required.

IV. Consultation

Consults with school personnel, parents and community professionals and agencies. Acts as a liaison between school personnel, parents and community agencies.

V. Intervention

Provides, evaluates and documents direct services to students, parents and teachers, in both individual and group formats, as required:

A. Students

Learning and behavioural strategies assistance Study and organizational skills Brief counselling and referral for long-term counselling Peer mediation and peer support programs Conflict resolution groups Social skills groups (e.g., peer relations, bullying) Anger management groups Mentorship programs

B. Teachers

Individual program modification, planning evaluations (e.g., assists in the development of IPP's) Development of learning, behavioural and social/emotional strategies and programs

C. Parents

Development of learning, behavioural and social/emotional strategies Parent education (e.g. Parent Effectiveness Training) Brief counselling and referral for long-term counselling


Contributes to staff development by providing workshops and/or presentations within the Calgary Board of Education and the community as required. Provides resource material to support and facilitate educational programming. Provides training and supervision of graduate students and Provisional Psychologists. Provides crisis intervention services (e.g., Calgary Board of Education Crisis Resource Team).

VI. Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge and awareness of the current theory and practice related to meeting the learning and behaviour needs of exceptional learners.


VII. Works collaboratively with other School Support Services staff as well as Area staff to provide a comprehensive service to students with exceptional needs.


VIII. Performs other related responsibilities as required.

Qualifications




Education and Experience

Registered as a Psychologist in the Province of Alberta. Provisional psychologists who are registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists, have successfully completed the required 1600 hours of supervised practice, and are eligible to be chartered within four months from the date of hire, may be considered.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

Combination of suitable education and experience Assessment and diagnostic skills Ability to work with a minimum of supervision Strong communication skills, both verbal and written Strong interpersonal skills Ability to work as a member of an educational team Personal suitability.
