Provincial Coordinator, Choosing Wisely Alberta (CWA)
. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Choosing Wisely Alberta (CWA) Provincial Coordinator plays a key role in the strategic implementation of Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) initiatives within Alberta, working collaboratively with a diverse network of stakeholders such as Alberta Health (AH), Alberta Health Services (AHS), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), the Alberta Medical Association (AMA), the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) and Health Quality Alberta (HQA). These relationships are essential for co-developing and implementing initiatives that promote appropriate care, improve patient outcomes, and optimize healthcare resource use. The Coordinator also supports student engagement through the STARS (Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship) program at both the University of Calgary and University of Alberta and collaborates with patient advocacy groups within AHS who promote Choosing Wisely topics.
This position reports to the Managing Director, Physician Learning Program (PLP) and works collaboratively with the Medical Lead for Choosing Wisely Alberta, currently the Assistant Dean of Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development (CME&PD) and PLP at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. Administrative support is provided by the Office of CME&PD.
Summary of Key Responsibilities

Networking & Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across Albertas healthcare system
Act as a provincial ambassador for Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC), promoting awareness and uptake of Choosing Wisely recommendations among healthcare providers, patients, and the public
Coordinate and implement communication and engagement strategies around CWA initiatives and activities, including managing webpages and social media
Facilitate collaboration with medical students through the STARS program and with patient groups involved in appropriateness initiatives
Identify opportunities for alignment and integration of Choosing Wisely principles into existing quality improvement and clinical practice initiatives
Project Coordination
Review national CWC topics for relevance and impact in the Alberta context, and the identification of provincial priorities and success metrics
Lead and coordinate the planning, implementation, and evaluation of CWA initiatives, ensuring alignment with provincial and national goals
Provide operational coordination and support to CWA projects, including risk identification, and issue resolution, in consultation with CWA Medical Lead and Managing Director, PLP
Identify and coordinate opportunities to integrate Choosing Wisely principles into existing quality improvement and clinical practice initiatives across Albertas healthcare system, including stakeholder-led efforts Collaborate on the development and delivery of presentations, workshops, and knowledge translation activities to promote Choosing Wisely topics and encourage uptake across clinical and public audiences
Administration & Reporting
Maintain awareness of relevant literature and background research to inform CWA initiatives and stakeholder discussions
Provide advice on project timelines, stakeholder engagement strategies, and risk mitigation approaches
Support the dissemination of findings for presentations, publications, and stakeholder communications
Prepare and deliver regular updates to CWC National Office, and other stakeholders on initiative progress, resource use, and outcomes, as needed
Develop and administer evaluation tools (e.g., surveys, interview protocols) to assess the effectiveness and impact of CWA initiatives
Contribute to provincial and national reporting requirements, ensuring transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement
Meeting coordination, agenda and minute preparation and documentation
Qualifications / Requirements:
Bachelors degree in a health science-related field required; Masters degree preferred
PMP certification or equivalent project management training preferred
Minimum of 57 years of relevant experience in healthcare, public health, or quality improvement environments
Familiarity and experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives within Albertas healthcare system
Experience in quality improvement (QI), program evaluation, and knowledge translation
Experience conducting literature reviews and applying evidence to support project design and implementation
Experience liaising with healthcare professionals, stakeholder organizations, and academic teams
Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to clinical, public, and academic audiences
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and relationship management skills
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and work independently in a dynamic, multi-stakeholder environment
Professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion in managing sensitive information and stakeholder relationships
