LogisticsJob Title:Protection and Control EngineerCompany, Department:Nova Scotia Power - Control Centre OperationsLocation:Ragged Lake, Halifax, Nova ScotiaType of Employment:Regular, Full-timeClosing Date:June 13, 2024Reference Number:2024-2999The OpportunityWe are looking for a Protection and Control Engineer to join our Control Centre Operations team. Reporting to the Specialist Protection and Control Engineer, you will support the safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System through operational engineering activities. This role is located at our Ragged Lake location.Key elements of this role include:Protective Relaying:

  • Produce protective relay settings for transmission lines and substations, coordinate relay settings with generation and distribution, and maintain under frequency load shedding and automatic reclosing schedules.
  • Specify minimum maintenance requirements for protective relaying and maintain adequate spares inventory.
  • Provide support to the Substation Operations and Technical Services engineering groups on protective relaying design and operation.
Forced Outages:
  • Operate and maintain disturbance monitoring equipment to assist in the investigation, resolution, and reporting of system outages.
  • Initiate capital improvements to address operational deficiencies.
Handing Over of Equipment:
  • Develop and update operating guidelines, protection summaries, system one-line diagrams, and operator displays for system changes and additions.
  • Accept new apparatus into service on behalf of Energy Control Centre Operations.
Outage Coordination:
  • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of planned outages, prepare, and approve switching procedures, and review protection and control requirements to support outages, all while balancing impacts to customers, system security, economic dispatch, and adequacy of protection.
Support Outage Restoration:
  • Provide support for system operators on protection, control, metering, and outage restoration.
Reliability Standards Compliance:
  • Maintain compliance with reliability and cyber security standards as they pertain to the Protection & Control functions of Nova Scotia Power.
  • Participate in compliance audits for reliability standards as a Protection & Control subject matter expert for Energy Control Centre Operations.

  • Graduate with a Bachelor\xc2\xb4s degree in Electrical Engineering, minimum of 5-7 years related experience, and a full member (or eligible for membership) in Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Fully developed technical knowledge in electric utility engineering disciplines and have knowledge of protective relaying systems and processes.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and a strong customer service ethic.
  • Good interpersonal skills and can function effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to provide work leadership and technical direction to fellow engineers and technical support staff.
  • A self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal development.
  • A valid driver\xc2\xb4s license and must be available for after hour consultation and emergency power restoration work.
