LogisticsJob Title:Protection and Control TechnologistCompany, Department:Nova Scotia Power Inc - Control Center OperationsLocation:Ragged Lake, NSType of Employment:Regular, Full TimeClosing Date:May 30, 2024Reference Number:2023-2307The OpportunityWe are currently looking for a Protection and Control Technologist to join our Control Centre Operations team in Ragged Lake, Halifax. Reporting to the Protection and Control Engineer Specialist, you will contribute to the development of systems and processes designed to transform business operations to meet provincial and federal environmental policies seeking to phase out coal fired generation by 2030. As the portfolio of projects reaches completion, this position will become part of the ongoing operations and sustainment team.During the Project Implementation Phase, you will participate in solution design, development and implementation of technology and processes including automation of optimization, aggregation, prioritization, curtailment, dispatch, reconciliation, and settlement transactions with existing and future wind producers in Nova Scotia.Key elements of this role include:As a valued member of the Energy Control Centre Operations team, you will support the safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System through operational activities including the following:

  • Protective Relaying:
  • Maintain protective relay setting documentation for transmission lines and substations, support coordination of relay settings with all generation, distribution, and grid battery assets, and maintain under frequency load shedding and automatic reclosing schedules and associated documentation.
  • Document and schedule minimum maintenance requirements for protective relaying and help to maintain adequate spares inventory.
  • Forced Outages:
  • Update documentation related to Operation and maintenance of disturbance monitoring equipment to assist in the investigation, resolution, and reporting of system outages.
  • Identify and recommend capital improvements to address operational deficiencies.
  • Handing Over of Equipment:
  • Maintain and draft operating guidelines, protection summaries, system one-line diagrams, and operator displays for system changes and additions for approval of the P&C Engineering Specialist.
  • Outage Coordination:
  • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of planned outages, and maintain up to date records and requirement documentation.
  • Fault Location:
  • Maintenance, investigation, location upgrades and installations and ongoing documentation and testing.
  • Drawing and Database Management:
  • Update and maintain P&C records and databases including ensuring the as built drawings and SODs are up to date and document histories are preserved.
  • Support Outage Restoration:
  • Provide support for system operators on protection, control, metering, and outage restoration.
  • Provide support for Energy Control Centre Operations during storm response under the company\xe2\x80\x99s Emergency Services Restoration Plan.
  • Reliability Standards Compliance:
  • Contribute to the maintenance and support of compliance with reliability and cyber security standards as they pertain to the Protection & Control functions of Nova Scotia Power.

  • You must be a Certified Engineering Technologist or Engineering Technologist eligible for membership with TechNova.
  • 2+ years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a technology diverse business user setting (particularly within the electric utility sector, is preferred).
  • Able to coordinate multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable with new technologies.
  • Technical knowledge in electric utility engineering disciplines and have knowledge of protective relaying systems and processes.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and a strong customer service ethic.
  • Good interpersonal skills and can function effectively in a team environment.
  • Self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills and a demonstrated commitment to personal development.
  • You must be available for emergency power restoration work.
  • You must possess a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license.
